Prime Roy Jones jr vs Joe Louis

Ok, well per below you said Louis "never fought a great black "fighter", put Jones up as P4P great or maybe the greatest ever then said Charles was the closest thing to Jones that Louis faced. You then called Charles very good not great. I'm sure you see where the confusion comes from.

The question is, do you think Roy is a great heavyweight???? Are you implying he's better than Charles at heavyweight? Charles did a lot more at heavyweight than Jones ever did. We also know Louis was way past his best against Charles and it was compounded by not having fought for over 2 years. Spinks beat Holmes when he was at a similar stage. There's thousands of examples.

I don't think Jones is as good a heavyweight as Charles, personally. 193 pounds looked bad on him.

He didn’t, he was and he would have been a great heavy in the 40s and early 50s.

John Henry Lewis surely counts? Around the same size as a prime RJJ, and from what I know it's unknown how long he had eye issues for. He could be like Frazier and found a way to make it work throughout his career, considering he was still beating guys in the light heavyweight top five within months of fighting Louis, as well as beating Jimmy Adamich the no. 7 ranked heavyweight that same year,

 

I know some will accuse me of heresy, but I think RJJ would give Liston issues as well. He was better than Whitehurst, that for sure.

 

Louis would have to hit him to beat him and that won’t be easy. Also much slower guys have hit Louis hard. Imagine the counter shots Louis would be eating from maybe the greatest P4P fighter of all-time.

 

The light heavyweight version of Jones rehydrated into the 180s come fight time. He was as big as the heavyweight version of Charles

 

Not sure Jones was better than Conn, who beat a lot of terrific fighters.

RJJ near shut out or KO or Louis catches up to him and stops him. The weight difference isn't much probably 15lbs in their primes. RJJ rehydraed to 185 at 175, so Louis has little advantages

Charles wouldn't be a great heavyweight in the 90s or 00s. Charles was a top heavyweight when the best heavyweights were about the same weight as RJJ if a little bit bigger.

Weight for weight RJJ looks levels better than Charles on film and it's not close

Also in what way did Jones against Ruiz look worse than any version of Charles, that's laughable.

 

Yeah there's no way on earth Charles is remotely comparable to Roy Jones. Charles is several leagues below Roy.

I believe what happened to Roy Jones at 34 was that he had slowed down just enough for some of his better opponents to tag him, which exposed a fragility of chin that always had been there.

 

John Henry Lewis is better than Charles and Roy Jones.
