John, a version of that warning had actually been around for awhile. The version was with 10 seconds to go, lamps would flash in the 4 corners of the ring to tip off the referee. It got a bit of notoriety in March of '73 during the 10 round non-title bout between Roberto Duran and Javier Ayala, which I saw. In the 10th Duran finally nailed Ayala right and decked him so hard that the lights malfunctioned and went off early. The timekeeper got confused and rang the bell about 40 seconds early. There was mass confusion, the fighters had already cut the gloves off but when the mistake was made clear, the commission made them glove up again and finish out the remaining time. Bizarre.
Cheers scar. Maybe this fight saw it as virtually mandatory. It gets credit for it. Imagine having to put the gloves on and go again for 40 seconds lol. Sounds like a wild finish for sure.
