Ezzard Charles was the #1 Ring rated contender for both fights. Valdes was actually #2. The first fight was on the 17th June, below are the ratings for May 20th and June 21st to cover both sides of the fight.

Comments regarding ratings etc post fight -

"THE fight, instead of putting Charles out of the running
so far as a contender is concerned, strengthened his hold.
Though the general impression seems to be that Valdes and
Cockell should get a chance to see what they can do against
the Brockton Blockbuster, one cannot shove Ezz to the
sidelines after his showing. He still must be ranked the
Number One challenger. He has earned still another shot
at Rocky according to Jim Norris who figures that such
fight in September will outdraw any other he can arrange
and the public will agree with that."

Ring magazine ratings were not his official ratings. I don't know how else to say that. It's pretty simple.

    Whose ratings were "official? "
And why were they more credible than the Ring's?

The NBA and the New York State Athletic commission, who sponsored the titles he fought for.

Guy take it easy you’re taking this way too serious. We have the fun of expressing our opinions and debating it shouldn’t be personal.

You’re missing the point Marciano may have met minimal standards but he was being protected which is fine but the overall competition was not high. Today he would have lost 2nd Charles with split nose and 1st Walcott by 12 round decision. Moore Valdez was a pickem. Braddock was the ref and only vote. He was a good old boy from the docks. Was it grooved so he wouldn’t have to fight the bigger guy?

I feel it's time to set the record straight, your wrong I don't dislike you, honestly I don't, over the years I have been a member, reading your replies to other posters left me feeling you were somewhat rude, abrupt and curt, I felt that you, not only you by the way, could have been a bit more courteous, and a little less confrontational, but in hindsight maybe I was being a tad precious, as I always maintain we are all free to say and express ourselves as we choose, providing we keep the conversation civil and polite, that's just the way I was brought up, you may think I am fake, and some do, and that's your provocative, I am record, in print, praising your knowledge, just recently I advised any newbies to follow and check out your posts ( along with Greggs ) to be educated on our sport, did I not, and I have "liked" many of your interesting and informative contributions over my time, as you have mine to be fair, so going forward for my part, I apologise if I gave you the impression you were disliked, and would like to carry forward a clean slate, but I fully understand if my perceived slight has caused you offence, and your not up for any olive branch mcvey, and I know it irks you somewhat, but I will wish you good health, we are both old men, and my health isn't good at the moment, I sincerely hope yours is.
    Mike.

NYState recognized Frazier v Mathis as for the World's title.

    Also a subsequent "defence" against:
    Zyglewicz

    The WBC recognized "defences "against
    Stander
    Daniels

    I'll go with Ring's ratings!

Like I said… yes there were some weaker opponents on his journey to the title. But that’s not ALL he fought. And whether he was facing a tomato can or the best heavyweight in the world, he always won and many times emphatically. Let me ask you this ( respectfully ) what else was he supposed to do? I’ve heard the Valdez argument many times on this forum and that’s fair. But I don’t think the man’s entire legacy should be flushed down the toilet just because he didn’t sign to fight ONE guy

What are your talking about, about 38 of those were clear cut bums. Are you a Brian Nielsen fan too?
