POST SCRIPT: Ituama has done nothing to earn a shot. If Usyk doesn't want to gift him a shot, he shouldn't have to. Nor should there be any reason to fave Dubois again.

 

He's at that point that every athlete reaches where he is facing the end. Soon, he will no longer be doing the thing that has been his life for as long as he remembers. He remembers the Olympics. He remembers undisputed. He remembers giving each of his children an undisputed belt. Most of all, he remembers his dad. And even though he knows it has to end, that part of him that made him what he is, Hemingway's Old Man in the Sea inside of him, the part of him that didn't quit through the countless hours of torturous training and of the punches, won't accept it. And like another great similarly named Alexander marching on the Ganges until his men rebelled, he will keep making new plans until those physical tools of his body that are his forces also rebel.

He can't go on forever. Or, maybe he can. Father time is undefeated. But he's not tried his luck against Oleksandr Usyk.

 

It's not even a remote debate Fabio should be next if he beats Dubois, as that would mean he's beat two in-prime heavyweights while Kabayel has beat an old man with zero engine and some obscure European.

This kid got fed two no-name journeymen early in his career that were slight steps up from we pulled this dude off the street and couldn't finish either of them. Looked frustrated as hell and tired in six rounders. So his team, clearly wanting to build up his this is the modern Mike Tyson!! hype, went back to feeding him utter cab drivers. That has continued until the current day.

The only slightly reasonable person he's been stuck in with is McKean. An MMA dude whose big claim to fame was not getting knocked out until the 12th round against lazy, unmotivated, and mid as hell Hrgovic. Other than that, his opponents have been absolutely dreadful. A bunch of them pushing or over 40 years old.

Now that his level is supposed to increase he's, uh, not actually fighting. Where Mike Tyson was poleaxing double digit dudes a month, this kid hasn't had a fight in a year. The latest excuse is that he hurt his bicep, but the word on the street is he's out of shape and high on the ganja all the time. So this kid is already choking his opportunities when his big scary next opponent is Jermaine fuggin' Franklin of all people.

He's fought nobody worth a damn. He's beaten nobody worth a damn. He's not even active in the phase of every young boxer's career when they're supposed to be knocking over all the journeymen in the division before getting their title shot. But Usyk is somehow obligated to fight this nobody? There are 20+ guys more worthy of fighting Usyk than this kid as it stands currently. Even Verhoeven.

 

I think Usyk might change his plans if he has good reasons (money). We'll see what happens after his match with Verhoeven, by which point both Fury and Wardley will have fought, and I think Usyk will pick his preferred fight. I'd like to see the Ukrainian champion fight Kabayel after Verhoeven, but, even from these statements from Usyk, I realize that unfortunately there's little chance the fight will happen.

 

Yeah, not what I'd like to see! The Rico thing is a novelty that I'm actually fine with. It shouldn't be for a belt though. If Wardley wins, that's fine too but not Dubois ( I don't see the point ) and **** Fury. I think a Kabayel fight in Germany would be good. A good win for his legacy at the tail end of his career. I know this is not a popular opinion but I actually think that Usyk should nab the zuffa belt, it's meaningless right now but in 20 or 30 years when it's quite possibly the most important belt, it will look good on his resume and ATG status.

 

For the good of the sport he should retire or relinquish the belts. Before his fan boys come rushing in... no one earns the right to hold belts hostage and delay valid contenders getting their bread. Usyk's pockets are deep enough and I couldn't give a **** about him pocketing more cattle coin.

 

Let's see:

• Rico: sponsored by Turki, huge payday.
• Wardley/Dubois winner: undisputed title fight, huge payday.
• Fury: very popular name, huge payday.

Kabayel and others would bring much less revenue than these 3. Usyk is after big money in his last 3 fights.

 

If Usyk fights the winner of Wardley vs Dubois, he will lose the WBC belt, so it won't be for undisputed.
