Nigel Benn claims Joe Calzaghe would have beaten all four legends: Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, and Marvin Hagler.

Benn told The Sun: “The old-timers will tell you that Calzaghe would never have lasted against Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, or Tommy ‘Hitman’ Hearns. I disagree. Joe would have beaten them all. How many fighters would love to end their careers with a record like Joe’s? Outside of Wales, I don’t think he received the recognition he deserved. 46 fights undefeated is a hell of an achievement. I don’t think we’ll ever see anyone like him again.”

Duran only had a few fights at super-middle at the end of his career and didn't fare well, Leonard and Hearns only had a few fights at 168 while having 3 title fights at 175, winning two and losing one, Hagler never fought above 160, would Joe have beaten the fab four?

Leonard and Duran are chanceless pretty much.

Hagler is very small to be in with Calzaghe but maybe he could bulk up to a point where it wouldn't matter too much. Calzaghe would edge him out though I think.

Hearns I think would beat Joe Calzaghe. Kessler gave him terrible trouble very early on and forced Joe into a brilliant adaption that I just don't think would work on Hearns. Hearns has a really nice style advantage IMO and I think he would just reach and hit Calzaghe, that lazer-guided accuracy means he would risk a little less. Hagler perhaps doesn't have the same synchronised power and gets outlanded. So:

    Duran wide and clear.
Leonard closer but still very clear.
Hagler might be very close, even confusing but I favour Calzaghe.
Against Hearns Calzaghe would ship some really big punches and despite that creepy balance and footwork, he wouldn't be in position often enough to take advantage of Tommy's offence. He'd be slowed down too. Hearns wideish.

I mean, he does definitely beat Duran and Leonard. Beating Hearns isn't a huge stretch either. Hagler is the one I doubt Calzaghe beats but that's also the one where 168 is completely uncharted territory.

I largely agree except I think Hearns and Hagler both had the reach to bother Calzaghe with their jabs.

He probably would, Hagler would be a Welterweight today, Duran wouldn’t win a round, Leonard is also far too small, probably would fight at 140lbs today.

Hearns doesn’t have the durability, Calzaghe would get inside, wear him out and either stop him late or outwork him down the stretch, but I could see Hearns dropping him early.

lol Hagler had a longer reach than Calzghe and beat Mugabi who despite coming up from 154 was much bigger than Hagler and far more powerful than any welter, no welter could punch as hard as Hearns, Hagler's chin was insane and Leonard was a big welter with a longer reach than most modern welters plus he sparked Lalonde who was far bigger and more powerful than any modern welter, both Ray and Tommy were completely ripped at welter and Hagler was ripped with zero body far at his weight, no welter has a body like Hagler had and no fighter at 140 has body like Ray had who stood at 5'10, insane comments.

Hagler would still be a 147lbs fighter.

He came in at like 157lbs on occasions, and these days they usually cut around 15lbs of water weight so they can rehydrate after the weigh in, so he’d actually be on the smaller-average side in terms of size at 147lbs.

As for Leonard, he weighed in at 147lbs on the same day with hardly any water weight cut, so he could easily cut more water weight to 140lbs considering the day of rehydration these days.

Also, Hagler and Mugabi looked a similar size to me in their fight, but even so, what do you think Calzaghe would have done to Mugabe? Calzaghe would lose a second of that fight, it could be more 1 sided than the Lacy fight.

Calzaghe was the naturally bigger man who fought at a higher weight class his entire career, so yea, he probably would have to be favored against all of them.
I disagree with many who think Hearns had a chance. Tommy wouldn't be strong enough for him. Calzaghe just kept bringing it, threw a lot of punches, and had a great chin to boot. Tommy struggled against lesser fighters and was undependable in big fights. Hearns looked good when he had guys who struggled against his height and reach, and those he could KO. Calzaghe isn't that opponent.

I think he beats Duran, Hagler and Ray,tho Hagler I think gives him absolute hell.
    Hearns is a 50/50 one.

He'd be a LHW in their era, so nothing strange with favouring him over them.

No, he wouldn't have... sorry, I thought it was about JC beating the UK Fab 4, who were bigger in Stature than the earlier Fab 4, with the exception of Hearns, though tall, he was very lean in those years.

so, I correct myself, he would beat Duran & Hagler, maybe, but probably not Leonard or Hearns.

He might have beaten Duran because the vast difference in size. And Roberto didn’t start fighting anywhere near Calzaghe’s weight until he was last it. Joe might have been a tough fight for an aging Leonard who likewise was past it by the time he was at middle and above. Hearns and Hagler would have decimated Calzaghe

Leonard was tall for a welter and still had great definition in his body at 168 vs Hearns why would he bother trying to make 140? Ray punched far harder than any modern day light-welter, he would destroy them easily, Mugabi was taller than Hagler and had more fat on his body, Hagler had definition and hardly any body fat and I know Calzaghe would toy with Mugabi I wa simply pointing out that Mugabi had the size and power of a super-middle weight but Hagler could take his punches flush, Calzaghe was not a hard puncher on average despite flooring the iron-chinned Eubank Sr.
