Who wins: Joe Louis vs Joe Frazier

Louis wins - I always liked Frazier, but Louis was a level above.

 

As great as Joe Louis was I think this is a bad matchup for him--especially FOTC vintage Frazier. Louis's MO was to stalk his opponents--he never faced someone who applied constant pressure like Frazier (other than Marciano, and he wasn't as relentless as "Smokin Joe" was.) And Frazier's bob and weave could upset Louis's timing on his punches.

Ultimately I think Frazier would absorb some good shots but his relentless pressure and work rate would wear Louis down. KO or stoppage in 11-12 rounds for "Smokin Joe."

 

Frazier was a one armed heavyweight lacking coordination and power with his right hand. He would be walking into a buzz saw against Louis who had one punch ko power in either fist. Joe walks into a right hand in round nine to end the bout.

 

I would fully expect Joe Frazier to walk into a combo and get dropped ,sometime in the first 3 rounds. I don't think Louis can keep Frazier down so this thing will go on. This is a hard fight to judge , as others have said Frazier could wear down Louis and stop him late but the punishment would be awful. On the other hand the ref might have to rescue Frazier from a beating and several knock downs. Be a hard fight to bet on.

 

I would not say you're wrong on that prediction, could well happen. But that uncoordinated one armed heavyweight beat the living sh#t out of the greatest heavyweight of all time ,Ali .

 

This. As great as Frazier was him lacking a right hand makes him made to order for Louis. It’s the same reason he could never beat Foreman.

 

Neither one of them clears a trilogy, either one could end up with 2

 

I've always favored Louis in this fantasy fight, and so I do now...

 

Louis via KO in 11. A war.

 

Very interesting I ve thought that this could be part of Fraziers new styles count tri matchup. Thats where Jack Johnson plays Ali and Joe Louis George Foreman.

Just maybe if we fight with 1910 rules (30 or more rounds and long clinches with punching allowed etc) Johnson beats Louis as he outboxes and outlasts him and uses his strength and uppercut to savage him in clinches. 1938+ rules however favor Louis with his dangerous power and combinations.

Fraziers speed and relentless pressure however overwhelms J Johnson. Johnson has his moments but Joe wins decision or stops him late. If we go 1910 rules helps Johnson to make it more even but not enough probably to win.

1942 207 lbs Louis crosses over into the power quotient where his punches stop Frazier in his tracks almost like Foreman. He stops him within 5 rounds or less after a furious battle. It wouldn’t be easy though and the lighter Louis like against Schmeling would have more trouble being out weighed by 7 or 8 pounds with Smokin Joes Left hook coming with combination of speed and power like Louis never saw in his career. Also Godoy and Marciano had success swarming and crowding Louis just Smokin Joes style. Surely Frazier is much tougher than them.

 

Frazier keeps getting caught going in by Louis crisp, powerful punches time and time again. Brown Bomber by TKO by round 8.

 

Joe was technically better but Fraziers fast swarming style is all wrong for him.

 

This fight could be a toss up based on who starts faster. Both of them had issues with getting nailed and possibly knocked down in the early rounds of the fight. Frazier could build up an early lead, if he starts and can keep Louis on his back foot, unfortunately his big shot is the left hook and Louis' bigger weakness is a good right hand. Louis on the other hand has great technique and can find ways to time uppercuts against Frazier's bobbing, he won't be as effective as Foreman though given he's not shoving Frazier to the range he wants him at to throw uppercuts again and again.

In conclusion, Joe wins.

I am in full agreement with your goodself, that Frazier was anything but uncoordinated, he applied a nuanced and well planned assault on many, if not all his opponents, that consisting of a full on body bombardment that would render all but the very best leg weary and in distress, alongside this ,his deadly hook would be cocked and ready for the slightest gap in the opponent's defense, if there wasn't, then he would be just as content to bide his time, until his midsection attack had lowered the guard enough to let loose the punch, I don't believe there has been a HW comparable to Frazier before or since, of course some have hit harder, some have shown a similar resolve ( Marciano ) but none have been able to fight for 15 rounds with his workrate, as far as I can remember, he truly was Armstrong in a HWs frame, as to him " beating the living sh#t out of Ali " not entirely on board with that, sure he did put a lot of punishment on Ali, as did Ali to him, more so in my eyes, Fraziers face resembled a gargoyle at the finish, and he would go to hospital that night, and be detained for some time, as I recall, Ali also was hospital bound, that being for his broken jaw, Ali was doing the circuits pretty much the next day, swollen jaw aside was lucent and looked and talked like normal, unlike Frazier who was kept in for observation, also Ali would come back and beat all contenders, then KO the fearsome Foreman, few thought he would, very few, where as Frazier was really never the same after that fight, of course he fought till he nearly dropped in Manila, he knew nothing else, and again he beat some good contenders along the way, but the way I see it, Frazier paid a heavier price than Ali for that epic fight, so I see the fight as more Ali beating up Frazier, than the other way round, just my opinion, and others will have there's I am sure.
