Could Max Schmeling Defeat ANY Of The Modern Heavyweight?

I have to admit you are making some sense but ‘the reason size would be a problem’? Buddy maybe you didn’t notice they have different weight classes and you know why? Because size ALWAYS matters. And yes height and reach also matter. When all else is the same weight height reach will make you win the fight. All else isn’t the same Usyk is as smart or smarter more skilled and better conditioned. Add size and Schmeling is in as much or more trouble then he was in Louis 2.

 

Ortiz would probably beat Baer decisively so how is Martin losing to him relevant in a matchup with Baer? Joshua also would be favored over Baer.

 

Weight classes existing every few pounds have tricked people into thinking size matters more then it does. Of course it matters but the sports adminisrative boundarys have little to do with that.

Got to remember guys like Usyk are well conditioned because of who they are fighting. A 6'3 guy weighing like 225 but whose got little power is getting the worst of both worlds when hes fighting someone like Schmeling. "In as much or more trouble then he was in Louis 2". Yeah in Louis 2 Louis knocked Schmeling down 3 times in 2 minutes. Usyk isn't Joe Louis. Usyk doesn't do that.

 

As others have said, you really don't have to be all that good to crack the top 20.

True. We don’t know how well he would respond to modern training. Some guys have the genetics to pack on 20-40 lbs of muscle and others don’t. And a chin isn’t something you can really fix. I really Schmeling would have been better suited at both light heavyweight and cruiserweight . I could see him being sort of like a Tomasz Adamek

No but having a modicum of skill does matter. Baer looks buffoonish in the ring. The fact he was able to have any success whatsoever is as damning a statement of that era as could be made.

Usyk isn't Joe Louis correct he's taller has a longer reach is much heavier is smarter better conditioned and matches him skill wise though they obviously have different strengths.
Which Louis do you like as prime: 2nd Schmeling fight? Today that version would be a cruiserweight. So you have to ask yourself what kind of strength and power would Usyk have if he was allowed to fight cruiserweights while he could weigh over 220 lbs.?

 

He would have to do a damn good job of landing first and landing often while avoiding that left hook like his life depended on it…. Because it would.

 

Did Schmeling ever fight a southpaw? I wonder how his laser right counter would fare against the great southpaws near his size.

 

Mercer and Morrison would have more the 30 lbs of muscle height and reach on Schmeling. You’d have to have some overwhelming skill advantage to compensate for that and Max does not.

 

Would he beat Mike Tyson in the early 90s?
