Who wins: Joe Louis vs Joe Frazier

I agree hard to tell what the strategy would be for Louis. Frazier had only 2 ways to fight all out pressure like he did 95 % of the time or stepping out and fighting defensively and then picking spots to attack like second Foreman fight and part of Chuvalo fight. Either way he will have to come at Louis and if the Louis that beat Simon 2nd fight (at 207 lbs who hit like a pile driver and would actually slightly out weigh the prime Frazier) is our prime Joe and he knows to watch for the left hook and that he needs to use upper cuts on the bobbing and weaving Frazier then I think he catches Frazier fairly often and eventually hurts him and it snowballs from there. The Brown Bomber will get caught with some left hooks that will hurt but thinking the punishment he doles out on Frazier will disable him before he can overcome Louis.

 

Agree 100%-Frazier won that fight but he absorbed terrible punishment from Ali in doing so and was never the same. He truly paid a heavier price!!

 

If Louis catches Frazier Louis is going to win if Frazier catches Louis Louis is probably still going to win.

 

If Galento could floor Louis with a left hook, Frazier has serious finishing potential

 

Frazier not having a right hand is a casual take. While certainly not his dominant weapon, he threw an excellent, fully leveraged right hand to the body and a powerful uppercut. Enough to keep his opponent honest.

I don't think Frazier would let Louis set long enough often enough to do damage enough to stop him. I do think Frazier pressures Louis and closes the gap and beats the angle to reach him, soon enough put him down and ultimately stop him. It would be the quickness of the feet and the accuracy of the fists pressuring Louis. And Frazier was good at not being countered after selling out on his hook. He finished with just enough of a head duck to make his opponent miss.

I would expect Louis to win by stoppage at some point but not before receiving one of the toughest fights of his career. This would be a war that fight fans would remember

 

Louis by TKO. Frazier would force him to unload on a regular basis and Joe was there to be hit by straight punches. Louis can also devastate you in close with the uppercut. Frazier had better not start slow in this one, or it might be over early. If he got past the first couple it would be torrid, Frazier would crowd him and whale away, probably stunning Louis and maybe even dropping him. The human jaw was not designed to endure too much of what Joe Louis had tho. I think he'd stop Frazier around the 7th. TKO.

 

2Ton Tony dropped Joe with a meagre left hook from a standing position. If Galento can get through once , Frazier can get through multiple times.
Joe Louis had no backfoot game. Fraizer is going to smash into him over and over. Smothering him , giving Louis no opportunities for timed counters.
Foreman had size and strength to push Frazier off him. Louis doesn't have the physicality to control Frazier.
Louis never faced anybody similar to Frazier. The speed of Fraziers defence and speed of his attack would be a complete shock to him.
He'd never be able to adapt to a style he had no experience of. When he hurt he stays hurt.
The match comes down to who people want to win , not who they actually believe would win.

 

It's surprisingly hard to pick a winner here. Louis is used to being the bigger, harder hitting guy but Frazier is about his size and packs a whallop himself. I think Frazier is a fair bit tougher and that his swarming style would not suit Louis at all. On the other hand Louis has a definite speed and power advantage and if slowpoke Foreman managed to land thunder on Frazier then surely Louis will too.

I can't pick a winner clearly. Louis needs to get Frazier gone earlyish or he's going to have hassles the longer the fight goes on.

I was going to say, if the fight 3 times, Frazier is at least winning once. Especially FOTC Frazier.

 

Styles for me. Louis is the greater fighter but Frazier has the style to beat him. I pick Frazier

 

Henry Cooper knocked down Ali with a left hook so why didn't Frazier knock Ali out? Sometimes a lesser fighter does something extraordinary. If it’s something that happens often thats a different story.
Louis will catch a few hooks maybe even get decked but he is going to be able to be able to hit Frazier hard and often especially early before Smokin Joe gets going. With his power and combinations he’s going to hurt Frazier and it should snowball from there. Even if he survives early he ll be debilitated enough that he won’t be able to beat Louis in a battle of attrition.

 

Not really. Frazier lost to Foreman because:
1. Foreman was strong enough to push Frazier away when he tried to get inside
2. Foreman's superior reach allowed him to harass Frazier with his piston-like jab at a distance where Frazier couldn't touch Foreman
3. Frazier's bobbing and weaving made him an easy target for Foreman's devastating uppercuts
