Oscar de la Hoya vs Felix Trinidad - 25 years later

So I decided to rewatch it, as I was editing my highlights of the fight like I do for many bouts.

Last time I had it 115–114 for Oscar, this time I had it 115-113 for Oscar. I had the first round even, but this time I thought Oscar won a close round.

There were some close rounds, but it takes Tito really getting the benefit of the doubt in order to give him the fight. Rounds 1-3 for Oscar, 4 for Trinidad, 5-8 for Oscar, 9-12 for Trinidad. I rewatched on HBO and Harold Lederman had it the same R-B-R as mex except he gave the 5th to Tito, so his score was 114-114.

The first round I gave to Trinidad was 4, and I thought that was close too. Oscar had some nice work with the jab, but Tito landed a nice right hand early on and a counter left hook upstairs (after Oscar threw his hook to the body).

Tito threw a nice left hook with about 20 seconds left in round 8, but I didn’t think it was enough for him to take the round so I gave it to DLH.

I gave Round 9 to Tito, but I can easily see it 10-9 for Oscar or 10-10. Oscar threw a beautiful combo early on, right hook to the body, left hook to the body, left uppercut to the head. Oscar backed up a lot after the first minute of the round, and Trinidad had some decent shots here and there. Larry Merchant even commented that Oscar was doing nothing after the fast start, and took a nice short left hook from Tito with about 50 seconds left. Oscar came back with a right hand with about 35 seconds left.

Oscar retreated in round 10, and especially 11-12. I actually still thought the 10th was a close round that Tito took. It was really the last 2 rounds when Oscar did more running.

The rematch would have likely been at 154, so I would favor Trinidad there. He was better above 147 than Oscar. I actually think the first Mosley fight took a bit out of Oscar, and he was never quite as sharp again after that.

Never found the rounds for Trinidad to even make it a draw, so a robbery for my money. In a rematch DLH might have felt that he needed to be more agressive to not be shafted again, and that would play into Trinidad's hands.

 

I thought Oscar won pretty easy and it was a huge robbery.

 

Im a big Trinidad fan, but Odlh was clearly robbed.

 

Tito clearly won the 4th round and there were several rounds even early where there was little to no action, couldve gone either way or called even.
The 1st round is a good example. Nothing happened to award either fighter the round. Try watching it again with with the sound off, without Jim Lampley's cheerleading.
A draw would have been fine or 1 point either way. Oscar gave away 4 rounds of a 12 round fight. With that I dont think he can say he was robbed. If anyone w
as robbed it was the fans.
The misconception that this was a whitewash or a dominant performance from Oscar winning his rounds bigger. Basically rounds 5-6-7 he boxed perfectly where Trinidad didnt look as good he the rounds he won. Hard to look good against a guy that is just retreating.

Kellerman said it at that time Oscar could've won but lost the right to complain.

 

If it was easy why did he stop boxing? He did nothing but retreat after about a minute into round 9.
It doesn't make any sense really.

 

I had it 115-113 Oscar but he only has himself to blame for the "loss".

 

He won round 9 it was one of his better rounds.
I think he rightfully thought he was easily winning so why take a chance and just play it safe.

 

Fatigue. Oscar said he was tired as he had never boxed like that before and that his legs were shaking. He thought he was too far ahead on the judges’ cards.

Given how generous judges had been to Oscar in prior close fights in Vegas, it’s not hard to see how people would think that. The judges had him beating Whitaker 9-3. If he had lost the 12th round against Quartey, he still wouldn’t have lost it on the official scorecards.

 

I scored 114-114 a draw. ODH scored more but Trinidad was the aggressor throughout the fight.

 

I watched that fight with a long time friend of mine. We had been arguing about Hagler v Leonard for years at that point. At the end of Trinidad vs Oscar, I had Trinidad by one point and he had Oscar by two. When the decision was announced my friend looked at me and said "We will never talk about Hagler/Leonard again."
And we never did. For the rest of his life, when we argued about boxing it was about Trinidad vs Oscar.
