Although I disagree, I love Doctor Zhivago, granted, I'm also obsessed with the Russian Revolution. Gave this thread a gander, it's P4P the best movie thread on the internet, and it's on this suite.

Yeah. RDJ got my respect in Less Than Zero. Great performance. But now, although still good, he plays the same type of character. Smart, witty, A hole with a somewhat good heart.

That's one of the films of his I had in mind, which I rewatched a few months ago.

Less Than Zero (1987), my sister irresponsibly let me watch this when I was around 11, because she was head over heels in love with Robert Downey Jr. I mean, she even took me to see Air America in the theaters. That's how hardcore a fan she was. Although it wasn't that big of a deal, she'd already bought me a copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 on VHS, simply because I asked her to. Still, watching it left a lasting impression on me as far as the effects that drug abuse can have on family and friends and probably indirectly contributed to me being straight edge for pretty much my entire life. Because the film genuinely traumatized both of us, thanks to the stunning performance Robert gives in this film. Maybe because he's an Aries, it affected me as deeply as it does, not sure... but it gutted me. Which made things all the more devastating and tragic when life started imitating art, RDJ wasn't a heroin addict when he did this film, he was only a pothead at the time. Which highlights what a brutally underrated actor he truly is. So when he started spiraling out of control in real life in the late 90's, it was looking damned near certain that he wasn't coming out of his addiction alive. So I decided to rewatch it then, which made it all the more gut-wrenching. I wanted to see if it was really as good as I thought it was, and if it held up, and it did so magnificently. But also, just because it so eerily resembled what was happening at the time with him. We both watched the events surrounding him like hawks, and the fact that he somehow through the grace of God and sheer willpower, he managed to pull through and get himself clean, is one of the true miracle real life stories that cesspool out there has produced. I still get misty eyed watching him in Elton John's I Want Love video because of it. Sure maybe I get too involved in people that have nothing to do with me, but what can I say? When I'm a fan, I'm a passionate guy! Also, Robert is a sweet guy that's easy to root for.

Sadly, this film due to the backlash, has never and probably never will get the love and respect it so richly deserves. The controversy being, all of the literary hipsters railing against it, because it strayed as far away from the Bret Easton Ellis written source material as it did. Well, I've never read the book, so I don't and never will give a ****! Although for a select handful that have and like the film, I agree with their takes. Which is basically similar to The Shining controversy with Kubrick and King, sure it may be vastly different, but that shouldn't take away from what an underrated gem the film is. The director merely chose to use the book as a leaping off point, and went in a completely different direction. Even Ellis himself, all of these years later has changed his tune about the film and has grown to be quite fond of it. He was too emotional at the time to process that by leaving out most of the shocking and tawdry content from his book, it made it more relatable to mainstream audiences and more impactful and accessible, because they weren't repulsed by a barrage of depravities the majority of it's run time. A simple drama centering around three friends, two of which are addicted to drugs, was more than enough for most people. But sadly, the damage has been done, it's hardly ever shown on television, it's not streaming anywhere, and thank God I taped it off of HBO, otherwise I wouldn't have had a copy to rewatch in the late 90's. It's been all but forgotten about, which is quite unfortunate, because it's due for a major reassessment. There's some low level buzz on the internet, but the cult hasn't grown the way it should have by now, because well... the film is a bit of a bummer. But still, it's about as 80's retro in feel as you're going to get, the cinematography is excellent, and the soundtrack produced by Rick Rubin at his height (with Slayer, Roy Orbison and The Bangle doing covers), is pretty amazing. It's Brat Pack adjacent. It highlights the Beverly Hills/LA nightlife drug culture that everyone was obsessed with at the time, and shines a very harsh ultraviolet light on it. Revealing it for the shallow, depressing, dead end street that it really is. Also, it's a Christmas movie!

The plot, three best friends out of high school, Clay (Andrew McCarthy) Julian (Downey) and Blair (Jami Gertz) They've been friends since childhood, but Clay heads off to NYC to college. While his girlfriend Blair stays behind, tries to make it as a struggling model. His best friend Julian sleeps with Blair, and then gets tied up with Rip played by James Spader at his sleaziest finest, turns into a hopeless heroin addicted junkie in debt to him for 50 grand. Julian's dad has cut him off, no one will lend him money, and Rip is trying to force him into being a male prostitute, blowing guys to work off his debt. Clay when he shows back up, after a few years away, he's shocked to almost silence by what's become of his friends. Blair is a sad failure and has a burgeoning coke addiction that she's dealing with, but even she knows Julian is spiraling and is in desperate need of an intervention. The performances by all three of them are excellent, and while much was made of how brilliant Robert is, Andrew and Jami's performances were unfairly maligned. I don't think the critics or the fans understood what they were going for. Clay is quite numb and in a state of shock and denial as to what's happening. So it takes him some time to finally come around, and that's reflected in his performance, which gets more intense and focused as the film progresses. But still consistently aloof. While Gertz, this might be her finest hour. Yes, there's a performative aspect to what she's doing, but that's the point. She's trying to pretend that everything is fine with her and nothing is wrong. But she's doing a terrible job covering it up. It gets increasingly real for her as well, as she amps up the intensity, panic and distress the further we get into the film. Downey is incredible, he makes me cry several times in the last 30 minutes of the film, his manic descent into addiction is some of the most vivid ever captured on film, and it's kind of appalling he was snubbed of a Oscar nomination that year. The score, the lighting, the hazy immoral hypnotic allure, the ambiance, the melancholy and infinite sadness of it all. It really is a low level masterpiece. 9.0 out of 10.

There's a standalone Danzig song on the soundtrack, which is amazing.

IMO, Fundora is a freak of nature and a clear outlier.

This is also the result of day before weigh-ins, which sometimes happen up to 30 hours before the actual fight. If we reverted back to the morning of weigh-ins then Fundora would be fighting men slightly closer to his size/height.

According to Fundora and his own team, his walk around weight is close to what he weighs in, and he can even make 147, but I call BS on that. He was 172 lbs in his second pro fight and the same year he even made 147, but if 147 were that easy for him then he would have stayed at it for more than just 1 fight.

I agree, weigh ins must be carried out no earlier than 5 hours before the match.
