Is Sebastian Fundora the best fighter at 154 right now?

Do you think Fundora has a good shot at being the man at 154 based on his last showing? A new and improved Fundora is gonna be a hard fighter to beat for guys like Boots, Ortiz, Zayas, Kelly and if he maintains that momentum he could very well become undisputed so long as he keeps using his height and reach to his advantage.

If he maintains his distance and fight like he did last night, everyone at 154 is going to struggle with him.

He made some improvements from the first Tszyu fight and you can tell he has improved as fighter.

 

To unify he just has to beat Kelly and Zayas. Neither belt holder has any interest of fighting him. Boots and Ortiz are interim champ who wont risk fighting him while they try and work out their “who is the biggest diva fight deal”.

Fundora performed admirably against a shot, inactive, thirty seven year old former welterweight. That being said I wouldn't call him the best.

Fighters with quicker feet can get inside and do real damage to Fundora's lengthy frame and most of them, unlike Thurman, will have a real gameplan.

 

Zayas became champion only after Fundora dropped the belt. Ortiz is the interim champion and therefore his mandatory, Fundora hasn't mentioned him specifically after the fight. Fundora needs to step up his game as champion.

 

Yes but its the best weight class and Fundora is Fundora so people are reluctant to slap that label on him.

 

The Zayas fight feel through due to a hydration clause Zayas wouldn't agree to. But I agree, there are better fights at 154 he could make.

 

I disagree with this for several reasons. While Crawford did put on a clinic against the rangier Postol, Postol was extremely gun-shy and lacked the skill and technical prowess of Fundora. In the fight against Benavidez, Crawford was winning the exchanges, but Benavidez was severely limited due to his knee. Fundora, on the other hand, possesses an exceptional jab, elite outside fighting skills, and his inside and pressure game might be among the best. At this stage in Crawford's career, I believe Fundora could defeat him as decisively as he did Erickson Lubin, if not worse. Fundora could arguably be the best fighter Crawford has ever faced, and it is incredibly challenging to compete against a tall fighter who combines outstanding outside and inside fighting, much like Tommy Hearns and Vernon Forrest.

Jaron Ennis beats him, and Vergil Ortiz Jr. likely does as well, although the latter would likely be a very good fight.

 

Vergil and Boots definitely beat Fundora and there are a handful of guys who are, at a minimum, even money with him at the weight. Fundora seems more focused on his Harvard education than his boxing career from what I've heard anyways.
