Not only that, but Moore is particularly good at causing and targeting cuts with McGrain looking through what must've been scores of newspapers, and finding that Moore opened more cuts than any of the Murderer's Row or Fritzie Zivic. As well as having multiple fights against wrestlers where Moore seemed to deliberately stop them on cuts.

None of that seemed to matter against Marciano tho.

That's interesting, I hadn't picked up on it. It's no surprise tho, he's the encyclopedia of boxing.

I think that there is a very good argument that a 42 year old Archie Moore is better than any version of Saad Muhammad; personally I think that it is virtually undeniable. There is zero ground to claim that the best Saad Muhammad is better than the version of Ezzard Charles that fought Marciano.
Saad Muhammad was a very exciting fighter with a ton of heart. I vividly remember being in 6th grade and going to school after his first fight with Marvin Johnson and talking to my friends about it. But nothing that made him an exciting light heavyweight is going to help him against Marciano. And cuts and facial damage were a constant in his fights.

Moore was such a great ‘freak’ cause there was no one else really good around except maybe Harold Johnson. The 80s was loaded with really good even great light heavy’s: Michael Spinks, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Marvin Johnson James Scott, Jerry Moore, Virgil Hill Yaqui Lopez and Carlos DeLeon. These weren’t 40 something ‘freaks’. They were talented tough fighters in their primes. Was Moore champ when these guys showed up he would have been dethroned and relegated to being just another contender.

Yeah i knew that Mike. I know that era pretty well. The other around at the same time was "Jerry" Celestine who was beaten by Jerry Martin (lol), Spinks, Mustafa, James Scott, Johnson and others. Martin was the better Jerry.

Good to see you Mike, keep well mate.

Whooooa! Ya got me wow! Jerry Martin not Jerry Moore memory did fail me. Well then throw out everything I said you must be right. The 40something freak must be the greatest ever WHEN HE WAS OVER 40! He may be an alien guy just being honest. After all he had great competition for LH title uh will have to get back to you on some names. Hey but he beat heavy’s including the best of all that number 1 contender for 2 years Nino Valdez. Nino proved how great he was cmon he beat Cockell and the great Brian London sure he beat him on a cut but he was doing well. Nino was so good even Rocky wouldn’t fight him right?

So we got the 40 something greatest LH and the 5 10 184 1/2 greatest heavy champ who had the power of fantastically conditioned men of 240 250 lbs. It’s like a sci fi movie I tell ya. Hey ya know it was the 50s all that nuclear testing maybe they were radioactive?
