Name some guys who looked like a million bucks but performed like Nancies... couldn't punch, glass jaws, no gas tank, some major brittleness to their game... And not only heavyweights!
It's Ricardo Williams for me. After watching him the amateurs, he looked like a sure thing as pro but never came even close to living up to his talents. He had everything you need to be an elite talent except for discipline, work effort and heart. He ended losing fight after fight to guys that had no business beating him until being convicted of drug charges.
Bruce Seldon is the poster child for this. Guy was jacked. But, would just collapse if confronted with a strong wind.
Frank Bruno? He could punch a bit but not as powerful as he looked (which he looked frightening). His best punch was probably his jab. And then, against most the elite he faced, he gassed, got that look in his eyes, and found a nice place to lay down.
Doesn't see right to include world champions who reached pinnacles of the sport graced by a small fraction of a decimal of the millions of men who put on gloves.
Francisco Bojado was marketed as the next big thing, a future Latin superstar, when he turned pro in the early 2000s but lost to patsies and got in trouble with the law if I remember it right.
I'm not so sure about that one. He beat some really good fighters and was the IBF champion before getting destroyed by a hall of famer. He tore his rotator cup in his next fight and was never the same after that. He took a beating from Calzaghe and never quit. The guy always fought hard even past his prime.
That's a good one. I remember him well as fighter. He was a lot like Ricardo Williams, all talent but something was missing.
I agree. I thought about including Maskaev because of all the ko losses but the guy did knock out Rahman and win a world title. Too me, we should be talking about highly touted prospects that never won a title and flamed out early.
