Boxers who didn't really go to the body but were successful anyway

Heavyweights in the old days didn't go to the body much as they do now.

Pretty common for HWs to focus on the head only these days.

Its why people got excited about Kabayel in the first place, and to be fair it is a refreshing change of style.

 

Tepparith Kokietgym almost never work the body and was one of the most powerful Super Flyweight champion in the beggin of the 2000's, and a very charismatic champion also.

Disagreed. It was a very valued target post-bare knuckle era and during the smaller gloves era (Langford, Fitzsimmons being its huge advocates), with shining examples such as Louis, and 60's and 70's having consummate body punchers such as Frazier and Norton, and rib breakers such as Lyle and Foreman.

Would probably find plenty more examples when watching tapes, but if anything a lot of fighters keeping their hands lower was the sign of how devastating body shots could be—high guards open up a lot of targets downstairs as consistently displayed by the likes of Kabayel, or Inoue.

Body punching is a necessary arsenal of a complete boxer.

 

agreed mostly. Bivol is classic Soviet style. Beterbiev does NOT fight like that.

but it makes sense. Bivol’s physical bag of traits lines up beautifully with the Soviet style. He was born for it. Beterbiev, with his slower feet but much heavier hands, not so much.

 

Lots of the European style boxers in particular German fighters ignored body punching. The reason being, is in amateur boxing matches that are three rounds, it is not as important to break an opponent down physically like the pro game. It's all about scoring points and it is much easier for judges to score head shots than body work that hits partial elbows.

 

Eh, he usually throws a jab or a right to the body.

Erik Morales. He wasn't really known to be a body puncher. It's kind of funny too since he did knock out Daniel Zaragoza with a body punch.
