Who’s the best of these great heavyweight upsetters

Let's say that Corrie and Douglas met in the final. Who didn't Corrie drill? Rahman and Vitali had to go through hell to get those wins and Wlad wasn't as fortunate.

I'm going to assume that Corrie would nail Douglas and I don't have faith in Douglas' heart. He quit against Evander and looked like he wanted out against Tucker. Even against Tyson, he reacted strangely on the canvas and waited until the last second to get up. With Sanders, you could at least count on him fighting on at all costs.

 

Yeah I can see that. Sanders also got dropped by a bomb from Nate Tubbs. And beat very few good fighters. Had stamina issues etc. but yes he could win over Douglas

 

I don’t think Douglas would one shot Corrie in the first round.

The funny thing about these guys is they both have some name wins, but basically none of them were prime or in top form, including Wlad and Tyson. I think the only known guy who showed up at his best and lost was Ross Purrity against Sanders.

 

You could make some sort of argument that Young didn't lose between March 1973 and June 1978. He had his share of supporters vs Ali and the Norton fight was razor close. He completely schooled Lyle (rated top 5 both times) twice, beat Foreman during that period and at worst held Ali and Norton. Drew Shavers in his 19th fight. That's a big 70's run. After that he wasn't much, and very inconsistent. So he had 5 really consistent years. That probably covers some of the other guys named.

His two wins over Lyle were very convincing, two of the finer efforts of the 80's.

 

Schmeling if you are talking overall record.

Douglas biggest upset and probably best head to head.

 

For overall talent and potential definitely Douglas. (I've always maintained he could have held the HW title for a lot longer than 8 months if he was consistently motivated.)

Also, Douglas got knocked out by Louis Monaco in about three minutes, but somehow escaped with it not appearing on his record ... even though we all watched it happen.

Sanders and Douglas both scored unbelievable, single upsets. But Sanders was far more dangerous, while Douglas was a much better pure boxer.

This was on display when they scored their signature upset wins. Douglas was the masterful boxer, while Sanders made it quick.

Pretty much a tossup between them. Schmeling is in the mix just after them. Then McCall, who was dangerous for a really long time ... decades even.

 

Sanders over 18 holes.

Buster over 12 rounds.

 

I agree with what you say but the Monaco fight came when Douglas was about 37 years old and on the comeback trail.

 

It’s pretty close but I’d give the edge to The Sniper over Douglas. That Sanders the night he stopped Wlad was incredibly sharp, calm and confident. As was Douglas in Tokyo! Lol

But I just feel that with that Sanders, your room for error is extremely small given his amazing power and hand speed. Whereas Buster might nail Corrie a couple of times but given Sanders strong chin… he’s staying in there imo. Remember, Mike was very close to KOing Buster with a single uppercut.

But both these guys feats on the nights they pulled the upsets were incredible. And Max was a very close 3rd And I feel Max is kind of different here because the night he blasted away joe louis… I actually don’t feel that was his best version. But with Corrie and Buster… they were absolutely at their best they ever were.

 

It's easily Douglas, he completely outboxed and dominated a prime Tyson as much as his fans will try to deny it. Sanders bounced a vunerable Wlad off the canvas, who'd be stopped by Brewster a year or so later and was put down was it twice by TOS? And got stopped by Purrity too. Outside of that he fought at a much lower level and clearly had huge stamina issues.

Young and Schmelling are arguably as good or better for their era. But physically they wouldn't compete with Douglas at least

I have to go Douglas. All of them were inconsistent and had many loses but Douglas showed what he could do when he was right against Tyson. He also had some other impressive wins including McCall Trevor Berbick Greg Page and others.
