who is your all time favourite heavyweight whom you don't personally rank inside your all time top 10? For me, its Dempsey. He was such a pioneer. So fast and talented. His title reign didn't merit a top 10 all time spot but i love his speed and power, especially the left hook. I quite like Tim Witherspoon too. I know Tim is highly regarded on this forum. I love his cross arm defense and overhead cross. He has one of the more interesting and unique styles out there. He did have a lot of close fights and not convincing decisions, and periods of inactivity. Just a very hard fighter to rate but so unique.
Floyd Patterson. Outside of my top twenty, Ruslan Chagaev (so sad I couldn't get him in my all time top 100). What a fun fight Chagaev vs Patterson would be.
Sullivan is a very interesting historical figure. I can understand someone finding him to be a fascinating character. Even though we have no footage of him. But i love reading about those old time fighters and trying to understand their importance and the fascinating historical period they lived and fought in.
Rocky Marciano. I don’t care what era 49 and 0 is an accomplishment. Especially for a 5 10 184 lbs guy who started boxing late in life to accomplish that and fight most all the best around.
But Rocky number 2 to Quarry my hero. Not sure who would have won a showdown between them. Not the greatest of all-time but my favorites.
+2 for Floyd. As a person and his fighting style, and I used to rate him around 20 or so quite a few years ago. He seems like a deep-thinking actual gentleman who always tries to be fair and competitively on fire and empathetic at the same time. Probably not easy to do. Closest guys after that are probably Povetkin, oddly Mercer, Bruno, Vitali, Norton and Max Baer (as I type it out there seems to be zero discernible pattern here to me). But there are different combos of who they are and how they fight for each. Mercer, for instance, fights nothing like my typical favourites but he's a damn tank and there's something about his character that I just feel like I'd meet him at a family reunion and it would make perfect sense that he'd be a cousin I never met but would rather hang out and shoot the sheet with than anyone else.
Floyd Patterson He had to walk around in sun glasses and a fake beard, such was his shame after the Liston fights. But he decided to fight on, and he acquitted himself well.
