Charles wasn't chinny at the weight post war once he'd physically matured. He didn't win a strap because he was avoided. Not winning a belt has ZERO to do with how many would beat him. He was beating great fighters like Jimmy Bivins while being outweighed by a dozen or more pounds. He owned Joey Maxim 5 times, both before and after Maxim held the 175 title. He beat Archie Moore 3 from 3. If experts don't rate Moore #1 at the weight he is usually rated # to Charles.

Moore was one of the most powerful light heavies ever, so punchers aren't any sort of weakness. Craziness.

    Tarver over Charles lol

    Hi Buddy.
Thanks for prompt and polite reply,I will have to bone up on Gainer, of course I have read a some bits about him, but didn't realise he was that good as to you favouring him over Charles, slight push back, if I may, not sure there was 100s of " great " LHWs over the decades, good ones maybe, but great, not feeling it sorry, but as always respect your opinion, you are of course correct when you state Charles didn't win a belt at the weight, but he did beat fighters that had won the title, Lesnevich and Maxim come to mind, plus he beat Moore 3 out of 3 the last by KO, and Archie is without doubt a top 2/3 LHW in most punters books, so not sure that is a detriment to Charles, anyway just my ramblings, look forward to more enlightening conversations with you in the future.
    stay safe buddy, chat soon.
    Mike.

Forgot about Lloyd Marshall. From what I read, RJJ would be a bigger, faster version of Marshall

Marshall beat Charles when he was young and not fully mature physically. There was talk of a pre fight hip injury. Jimmy Bivins put a beating on him the fight before.

Have a look at his performances post war, from 46 on. He's half a dozen pounds heavier and taking no prisoners. He folded Marshall twice in rematches and put 4 beatings on Jimmy Bivins for good measure.

If he beat Maxim after Maxim was champion then why wasn't Charles the champion?

Gimme Michael Spinks if I have to choose one guy to walk into a 15-round fight with Ezzard Charles at 175 and my life depended on him beating the Cincy Cobra.

Not a guarantee but he’d give me the best chance of being around the next day.

I also think Dwight Muhammad Qawi would have a fair chance against anyone at that weight but it’s unknowable as DMQ was awkward in ways that might throw some guys off more than others. But none would consider it an easy night’s work.
