Matthew Hatton

What i remember of Matthew he didnt have a lot of talent but he made up for it with workrate and toughness. Got better as the years went on. I think he,d do the training camps with Ricky so became a bit of a machine.

Respectable career Matthew had that probably got overshadowed by Rickys career. Not good enough to win a genuine world title tho imo. But anyone that goes 12 with Brook and Canelo should be respected.

 

I think Matthew probably overachieved, to be honest. He was promoted really well early on, coming through on the undercards of his brother, but when he stepped up early and lost at a level similar to Campbell, you probably thought that was him done. Fair play to him though, later in his career he really carved his own path away from Ricky and went on to become European champion and even took Canelo the distance.

The Brook fight was also a big one at the time, but Kell really outclassed him and Matthew was coming to the end by then. I always go back to the Craig Watson defeat early in his career, because at that point you’d never have thought Hatton would reach the level he eventually did, so all in all he had a really solid career.

 

He would be imo even old school era's a European level fighter.

No shame in that, very solid fundamentals, good defence, good work rate but not heavy handed and very predictable in attack.
Always in tremendous physical condition and would of held his own in the 15 round era as would keep going to the end.

Made the most of what he had @boxberry92 has him summed up perfectly.

 

One of the first ever fights I went to was Kell Brook v Matthew Hatton. Probably overachieved tbh. Decent career.

 

One thing's for sure, he gave Canelo a far better fight than a lot of his other British opposition (better than Hatton too).

 

Nelson went 0-3 as a pro, mental start to his career and was a sparring partner for all the big name German based boxers including the Klitschko brothers.

I have read and own a lot of boxing books Johnny Nelsons book is very, very good. Some great stories.

One chapter is called- someone is shagging your dog.

Yes he caught someone abusing his dog!!!

 

Yeah, Johnny always had ability, just not the confidence in himself. He had the beating of De Leon when they boxed, and then it was around a decade in the wilderness before he beat Thompson.

“Failing up” probably doesn’t do Hatton justice either, as he earned those later opportunities and clearly learned from the defeats, much like Nelson did.

 

Hatton gave Alvarez a better fight than who?

 

Not great but the surname opened up a few doors.

Remember watching Matthew fight Canelo in Mexico, the Mexicans were booing Canelo by the end. A tough gritty competitor who would fight anyone. Respect.

He was boring as **** and wasn't very good.

 

Admittedly Matthew wasn't one for the casuals but he was a solid euro level fighter. UD's against Brook and Canelo showed how tough he was. Never knocked out.
