Hagler vs Ray Robinson

I'd say Robinson wins a hard fought decision. I'm convinced Leonard won their fight. Peak middleweight Robinson could do everything Leonard could do and then some. And yes I know Hagler was a little past it, but Leonard had been inactive for a few years.

 

We’re talking 1950-51 Robinson vs 1981-85 Hagler. I’d pick the Robinson that beat LaMotta to take a very hard fought decision over Hagler - maybe even on a split decision.

Could be the most aesthetically pleasing middleweight title fight ever - a contrast in styles for sure but hopefully a meshing of styles too. I’d also be fascinated to see what Robinson made of Hagler’s switch-hitting. I can’t remember how many southpaws Robinson faced but Hagler wasn’t your normal southpaw.

 

I actually think Robinson wins by a decision but the poll feels like it doesn't represent how close the fight would be so I'm giving Hagler a pity vote.

 

Marvin close decision.

 

Ray Robinson and it's a clear victory. Maybe Hagler would come out and fight orthodox the first 4 rounds like he did against Leonard, what a dunce.

 

I think Marvin is the greater middleweight, but Robinson has the style and toughness to beat Marvin, with his hard, fast flurries. He’d have Hagler a bit preoccupied and taken out of his game.

I'd vote on Hagler to outman him. It wasn't like Ray was some defensive genius. He was an offensive powerhouse with great footwork. I think that Marvin would catch up to him and sweep the latter rounds.

 

Robinson wins a decision in a single one-off matchup, but this fight will be an utter hell that will test both men, and if they fight multiple times nobody's going to bat 1.000.

 

Now that the poll is no longer 10-0 in favor of Robinson I am retracting my pity vote.

 

I like Hagler by split decision

 

Hagler would struggle to solve the blend of handspeed and power that Robbi possessed.

He can't come at Robbi like he did Tommy - Robbi is just more durable, experienced and better in the furnace of hostility and taking back initiative.

I still don't like Hag's arguable drop in confidence when facing a fighter of Robbi's legendary calibre - his passivity against Duran and throwing away early rounds Vs Leonard make me second guess him against Robbi.

 

Hagler was a terrific fighter but struggled with fast handed boxers.

Willie Monroe defeated him (even Hagler admitted he lost that first fight), Bobby Watts got a lucky decision but he did give Marvin problems as did Sugar Ray Seales in their first 2 encounters.

He didn´t look great against Duran and losing to comebacking Leonard (coming off one unimpressive fight, dropped by a powerpuff punching welter, over the last 5 years) does not inspire me to pick Marvin over Sugar Ray Robinson.

SRR by tough but clear decision over 15 wonderful rounds.
