Man that's kind of a valid argument I guess. Maybe he needed a trainer that managed to keep his nose in the gym and who managed to get him obsessed with boxing. That makes an enormous difference to a fighter. Check out some of the latest Bas Rutten interviews. When the dude was fighting he had a monomania focused on the field. The type of thing where all he thought about was combat and where he'd wake his wife up at 2 AM to practise the new submission choke he had just dreamed of. Fury by comparison was basically on a permanent holiday. I can't help but feel that if he'd been deadly serious about his craft he'd have been the greatest of his age. Even better than Usyk, who IS focused on his craft non-stop. There, I said it.
''got paid got laid'' ''you big dosser'' ''you shithouse'' He's got more charisma than Joshua, who is abnormally awkward, but Fury is still not that charismatic, as he's just a repetitive loudmouth whose act got stale a long time ago.
Maybe... But then would that make him care more? And would that potentially put him into a more robotic form rather than the natural we've seen? And what would the consequences be if that had happened? Absolutely... But then Usyk is clearly a smarter man in general - and it takes a special sort of guy to be able to be that focused and that capable of coldly analysing things under pressure... Is Fury that kind of man, or would trying to be that have made him lesser than operating as a natural? Would thinking more and caring more have turned Fury into the "big, stiff idiot" type? We'll never know... And that's the problem, I guess... We don't know whether it's possible for Fury to have been more, we don't know whether he could've operated that way - and assuming he could is giving him credit for an ability we don't know whether he had or not... I guess sticking with what's proven... He was enigmatic, sometimes excellent and sometimes awful... You could've run his career 10 times and they could've looked wildly different - and would he have looked as good as he does now in any of them? Maybe (if he won a Wlad rematch, etc), or maybe not (if he fought Haye and got sparked early)
There’s pairs of socks in my drawer that have more charisma than Joshua, at least they have some interesting stains in them. Joshua always says and does what he seems to think a boxer should say or do, part of being thrust into the limelight without naturally wanting to be in it I guess.
AJ probably is still a bigger draw but at this point they both clearly need each other so it's pretty 50/50
When/if the fight gets announced between Fury and Joshua then we can decide who we think is the A side, both fighters need at least two warm ups imo and like I’ve mentioned before I can’t see this fight happening before 2027,also in reality this fight is as close and as far away as it has always been. I do think that Wilder could well be one of Joshua’s warm up fights which tbh is still the biggest fight out there for Joshua outside of a Fury fight. I’ve always said that Wilder brutally KOs Joshua early but not now,Wilder is clearly shot and imo Joshua KOs him early now. A win over Wilder even at this stage still gives Joshua a massive platform and an edge in negotiations for any potential fight with Fury .
AJ took the B-side to Paul because it was such a weird situation that landed in his lap. Hey, want north of $60mil to fight a mediocre as hell cruiserweight? He'll promote the fight and basically do all the work, you just need to show up. But you'll be b-side. It was so much money that AJ just went with whatever, with his only actual homework being to generate a highlight reel KO, which he did. Imagine being offered that much money for an easy day at work.
Fury was on permanent holiday but his elbows were still blown out by 2020. If he had more camps and trained harder he'd have just worn his body down faster....I'm impressed with how Usyk handled his HW move, he had shoulder issues on his right for a little while but seemingly fixed it.
