DAZN Offers

Apparently the Fury fight had over 5 million viewers in the UK alone. That probably makes it top 5 and perhaps the most watched TV show in Britain last week which is fantastic for boxing. It just goes to show that Sky are no longer the only show in town and that streaming really is the future.

 

It shows what's possible when a network has virtually saturation coverage in a country and gives away content as part of the sub. The only things that get close to this level outside of terrestrial TV are darts finals on Sky (since the Littler effect) and the very top end of Premiership games.

Also shows where DAZN fits into things - maybe there's no need to become the "Netflix of sport" when Netflix can show sport... wonder how much it would cost just to buy DAZN out and put the shows on the Netflix sub?

 

All for the love of the game and nothing do with higher salary. Come on dude, who are you trying to fool here.

 

Netflix have always said they have no interest in becoming a platform that's buys huge multi year round sports rights.

Instead the strategy is big one-off events which can drive new temporary subscriptions. It's all about advertising revenue for the lowest subscription tier without the financial risk of paying huge money for multi year sports broadcasting rights. Even with all the one-off sport events they do show, Netflix is just the broadcaster. They leave all the production logistics to external partners.

Thank you for the support Sir and that is exactly what I was thinking. Why burn your bridges at Sky for a short term payrise if you know it's going to fail. Look at Mike Costello. He was on the gravy train at the BBC for years. Had 3/4 years at DAZN. Got binned for Adam Smith ( that has to hurt ) and is now nowhere to be seen, certainly not on the Beeb. Short term gain for longterm pain. Anna Woolhouse isn't that stupid and I do think she loves boxing, i really do. The women in that ad could get jobs anywhere particularly in the current post ' me too ' climate. They see DAZN as a blue chip sports broadcaster. They've got agents and lawyers and accountants and sh1t, they know what they are doing.

 

She’s not burned any bridges with Sky though, she’s said she’s still doing darts and other stuff for them.

The future of domestic boxing on Sky is still fairly uncertain, and for now, equates to probably a handful of MVP shows a year, and maybe a Zuffa PPV down the line. Whereas DAZN can offer her a gig and a paycheque on domestic shows most weekends.

I don’t think it’s necessarily as deep as her showing a belief in the future of DAZN or a particular love of the sport, she’s just going where the work and cash is. And if you’re a freelancer, that’s what it comes down to at the end of the day.

Just a reminder how quickly things could go bang for so much of the world of boxing if they decide it doesn’t suit their agenda anymore.

 

This expands on my point. This idea that even if she left sky completely she would be burning bridges is ridiculous also. TV presenters have left sky and sky have had no issue bringing them back. The idea that there is some TV presenter war going on and all these presenters have to show loyalty or face the risk of never working at platform they are leaving ever again is laughable. It's not that deep!

 

Sorry but I don't understand this debate at all

Anna Woolhouse is a top class presenter and she will have no problem finding work elsewhere. All media companies would love to have her on board and I fully understand that DAZN sees this signing as a scoop.

 

Seems like there putting all there eggs in 1 basket with zuffa, that will fold in the next 5 years aswell

 

I'd be surprised if Zuffa is around in 10 years time, the Saudi's will eventually get bored and pull their finances out of the sport. I can see Turki throwing big super fights every now and then, but a complete takeover is just too ambitious with too many moving parts and cost too much in the long run.
