Does anyone know anything about Lennox Lewis being stopped as an amateur? appearently it happened in 1986 by some guy named Valeriy Abadzhyan , from USSR. I guess he was Armenian? Does anyone know anything about this Valeriy character? any footage of him fighting? How did he stop a mountain of a man like Lewis?
I can only tell you what boxrec has on his amateur record (he obviously didn’t turn pro as Eastern Bloc countries didn’t have or allow pro boxing), and they’re only going to have his record from international competition, major tournaments and such: A Russian born in Tajikistan, Abadzhyan represented the USSR in international competition several times. He fought in the World Championships (lost to Tyrell Biggs in the quarterfinals), World Cup, TSC Tournament (in which he stopped Lewis in Berlin), Friendship Games, Goodwill Games and in dual meets with the USA and Cubans. I found an online database that lists his record at 89-21 (with each result of those 110 bouts). He was stopped twice by Teofilo Stevenson, no disgrace there. He fought from 1979 to 1987 and that database shows him having three fights after beating Lennox, going 2-1, before retiring. Here’s some video: This content is protected
