So Wright wasn't quite the defensive master he would go on to be when he fought Vazquez. But would Vasquez always be a tough match up for him ? Or could Wright get his revenge ?
Vasquez floored him 5 times. He probably floors him again another 5 times.. Julio was a tank with power .. he's gettin in
Pre prime Winky arguably won every single round he wasn't dropped in so an at his best, prime Winky definitely wins. Edit: It should also be noted he was never dropped before that or after that until his very last fight........so Winky's sturdiness should not be questioned.
Score it as i remember it Winky won his fair share of rounds, despite being dropped almost half a dozen times in a entertaining fight. Winky in later years tried to say they were mostly slip, i like Winky as a fighter but that was total BS he was hurt numerous time and dropped legitimately. Winky hadn't quite adapted his stone wall like tight defence at this stage but still a very good win for Vasquez.
Vasquez probably stops him. Winky was 23 when Vasquez spanked him the first time. That used to be considered prime for the sub middleweight divisions. And he had 25 pro fights under his belt.
You are correct. Folks don't know that Winky really didn't have that deep of an amateur career and really learned his craft when he went to Europe. He also developed a friendship with WW champ Ike Quartey and started committing to that high guard heavy jab style that he was so successful with. Early in his career he was more of a mover which didn't really suit him. He was much better when he sat down on his jab and walked guys back with it. You can really see that progression around 99'. He didn’t lose a fight for six years after committing to that style.
