I'm afraid not, Fergy. Not career MWs. Of those who won a MW title and settled at LHW, RJJ may stand the best chance, off the top of my head.
I don't see it. I love Hagler, Monzon, SRR etc. but they would get starched. I could see someone like McLellan having a chance if he is weighing around 180 lbs or more on fight night. I would favour Bob but McClellan was so big, its a miracle he even made 160. RJJ obviously has a chance but he wasn't a career middleweight and i wouldn't favour him.
It's a tough pick,Greg. Jones is probably the top name most would say . Monzon is a great Middle, like Hagler, but it's maybe a step too far. Every second against Foster is dangerous and Jones would have to hope his chin isn't going to let him down lol.
He has the power to put Bob’s lights out as well as a much better chin and recovery skills. Say what you want about Fitz’s style but the guy survived and outhustled every big puncher from his era barring Jeffries. If he takes Foster’s leather I can see him recovering, can’t say the same for Foster.
That's a good suggestion. Even though James didn't have a ton of success at 175, he had the defensive skills and chin to hang in with Foster's power. Also, I could see him counterpunching in-between Foster's big power shots. Ezzard Charles started at Middleweight. I would pick him at 175 over Foster's for sure.
You know, that's a good one McVey. Langford had a lot of experience against bigger men . He's a giant slayer, if he can get in past that jab of Fosters he can do some real damage. Nice one.
I can't see it mate. As you said Light Heavyweight was Toney's worst weightclsss he was going through the motions at that time. I rewatched his fights vs Griffin a few years ago and his corner was pleading with Toney to go all out in the 12th round. But Toney just did nothing in the 12th round and lost a close decision. Toney at that time wasn't willing to give it his all to win a tough fight. So I can't see Toney at Light Heavyweight beating Foster. As for former Middleweights who would have a chance ? Hopkins, RJJ, Hearns, Charles, Moore, etc would be the obvious picks. I do think Foster is a bit overrated personally I think he ruled over a very forgettable Light Heavyweight era. Not that I'm saying Foster isn't a major threat H2H due to his height, jab, power. But I still think his opposition at Light Heavyweight wasn't that great in all honesty.
I wouldn’t bet money on Toney with confidence either, I'm just saying he had the right skillset and whiskers to pull it off if he was in shape which is always the question marks with JT. I don't put too much stock in the Griffin fights. Totally different skillset from Foster. James excelled against bangers and Montell's slippery style was problematic for lots of guys. A better suggestion is one that you mentioned. I think BHOP could beat Foster. He certainly had the defensive ability and suffocating style to get it done. He only got stopped the one time when he was 50 years old.
