Both Nazarov and Johnston were title holders at 135 around the same time but didn’t get to face each other. This would have been an interesting match between two very talented southpaws. Who would you have favored had they fought around 1997-1998?

Two ships passing in the night but I would say by 97 Stevie was on a hot streak and Nazarov was petering out a bit. Other than that, Mendy stands out as their common lefty opponent and Johnson did better.

I will cautiously take Stevie to win a decision here by a couple points.

Oh, this guy. My daughter, Moon Unit, she used to say "Daddy, I'm gonna marry him, one day." and it'd just make me apoplectic. "No daughter of MINE is gonna marry no Kyrgyz mustache-head!" Pardon my French. But I even broke some of my chia head collection in rage. And that is the kind of thing you don't just let go.

    Nice fight.

I can see either winning, but unlikely to see a stoppage either way. Gussie was a heavy-handed guy, but Stevie was a difficult guy to catch clean.

I think the biggest knock on Johnston was lack of power and size. He was technically so sound that he could often overcome that, but Nazarov is really underrated as a boxer. People remember him for the Gamache blowout, but he was a lot more than just a bulldozer.

Around 1997, I think Nazarov's bigger size gives him the edge in a technical nip and tuck fight. Obviously, if we're talking the next year or so the odds start to shift towards Johnson.

I feel your pain but...did you know that many grocery stores now sell chia seeds?
That's right. No more relying on late night television for your chia purchases. Now you can grow your own.

I'll be damned. This is a pretty good thread, I guess.

    Nazarov had the better moustache.
