Was Frazier past his prime in Kingston?

Honeyghan went down hill fast.

 

I think Quarry 2 was one of Frazier's best performances, better than the first. He had slowed down a bit, but was really sharp.

 

I've never read much about Frazier's training and diet habits. I suspect he liked "soul food" and cornbread with his drinks. He was from South Carolina. That might explain the hypertension. He'd never had a well-defined musculature but he looked softer after FOTC. His body never looked as good again. It was very noticeable. But he was, indeed, dominant in his second meeting with Quarry. I had the feeling he really enjoyed fighting him. He knew he had Jerry's number.

 

Yes. He was slightly past his prime for Superfight 1 ..

It's very odd because quite frankly he looked like **** against Daniels, and Stander yet looked much better in his rematches with Ali, Ellis, and Quarry. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he'd improved from the beating he took from Foreman.

 

A few things to note.

Frazier stopped Ellis in 4 rounds in their 1st fight compared to 9 rounds in their 2nd fight.

So I don't think Frazier did better against Ellis in their rematch.

Plus Ellis was considerably past his prime he'd only have 1 more fight and had lost 3 out of his last 4 fights.

Frazier did stop Quarry quicker in the rematch but I also think Quarry was on the verge of being past his best.

Quarry wouldn't really have another notable win after the loss to Frazier and would get battered by Norton not long after.

 

He looked good against Quarry partly due to Eddie Futch's gameplan. He had Frazier using his right hand when Jerry was looking for the hook.

 

I meant his performances in those rematches were better than his performances against Standers and Daniels, not better than in his prime.

 

If any victory could be classified as a "pyrrhic" victory--it would certainly be Frazier's triumph over Ali in the FOTC. Joe took TERRIBLE punishment in that fight and was never the same! (Even in Manila he was about 70-75% of what he was at his peak!)

 

Frazier was a "lifelong diabetic"

 

He was past his peak, but I don’t think it would have mattered. Foreman was all wrong for him.

Holyfield did not hit his peak after Bowe I. He hit it before Bowe I. He was thirty years old and had taken bombs from the best before Bowe I. That's why he retired after the first Bowe fight. He was over the hill, coming down.
