Rocky Marciano vs the great Jimmy Young

You said it, rather succinctly. Gets my vote.

 

Young is 3 or 4 Inches taller has like almost a foot in reach more the 20 lbs hes a much faster much better boxing skills hes very wiley tough and doesn’t cut nearly as easy. So let’s see how has Rocky going to beat him? Rocky takes a thrashing for 5 or 6 rounds before it’s mercifully stopped.

I know it’s hard to let go of the idea that childhood hero’s were not as good as we thought but we don’t want to live in a delusion do we?

 

Because Jimmy Young was not historically elite but is the single most overrated human being discussed on this forum.

I’m a Rocky fan but I m not delusional about his ability. He fought in a different era after all the young men in the country were in the military for WW 2 1942 to 45 then Korea 1950 to 1953. The economy in the fifties was on the upswing and ex GIs were given benefits for opportunity where they didn’t have to get hit in the head. So you ended up with a high percentage of the top fighters being old guys that started fighting before the war.
Young would have been much bigger then Rocky and faster and more skillful and a match in any other category. How can you pick Rocky over that???? This guy beat George Foreman you think hes gonna be hurt by little Rocky??? He was so good he may have been robbed of the decision against Ali.

 

You’re comparing Cockell to Jimmy Young??? Buddy go back and watch some video. Cockell wouldn’t even be in the top ten in the 70s he is levels below Young.

He probably had as much power as Lastarza and Lowry.

 

I would agree and probably a lot more. He was 6 2 and 213 when he beat Foreman. The means he would have about 30 lbs at his peak weight over those guys.

 

Weight is not the only factor but it always is one factor. A hard punching middleweights shots probably bounce harmlessly off a cruiserweight. But if the middleweight properly bulks up to 195 he’s going to hit harder. It depends what kind of extra weight if it’s fat and flab or does it go in as mostly muscle.
Young in his prime was in shape and not fat.
