We have no evidence that Harry Greb was that good.

And it was a great read.

 

As did I.

 

And Tunney stayed in the hospital for the better part of a week.

 

Tunney also mentioned he had nightmares after fighting Greb, just a dancing demon who beat him bloody and nothing he could do about it.

 

And I did too, it was an interesting, worthwhile post that actually contributed information and perspective to this discussion.

 

And that's precisely why the uneducated are uneducated.

Great post as per Jacko. Even in that silly play sparring footage Greb looks, to me, to have a weirdly good radar. The descriptions here remind me of the ultra talented Jung Koo Chang us lower weights aficionados used to rave about on here - an insane offensive ultra-talent who used his abnormally developed radar to jump in and out with insane unorthodox attacks and angles without taking much damage, all alongside an incredible work rate. Possibly a good stylistic parallel to what we've read on Greb imo.

 

Not only does his resume speak for itself, some of the opponents who fought him claimed he was one of the greatest of all time.

 

We don’t have film, yeah, but we do have a ton of fight reports, records, and most importantly the level of opposition he beat. He fought and beat elite guys consistently, often under tough conditions, and did it at a crazy pace.
Also the respect from his contemporaries says a lot. Guys who actually fought him or saw him up close rated him extremely highly.

As to the bad beating he put on Tunney in fight No 1, this from Runyon " Tunney walked into a hornets nest last night, and damn nearly got stung to death " how apt, Tunney " by the 13th round I was weak from the blood loss, and the constant swallowing of blood, my corner decided to put a tot of rum in my water, as I came off my stool, I felt sick, and when I started to cross the ring, I saw 2 Greb,s, believe me 1 Greb was enough for any fighter, but 2 " this must go down as one of, if not the worst beating a fighter has ever recieved, and Tunney despite being labelled at the time as a fancy dan, proved beyond doubt he was a very courageous and brave fighter, not least because the next day he went to William Mouldons office to post a bond for a return with the fire cracker that was Greb, only to be told by the commissioner that he was " out of his league " I really don't know why there is push back on Greb being the GOAT, it truly baffles me.

All obvious trolling aside, it always annoys me when some posters alert us that because they haven’t seen so and so on film (and in fairness, this usually means Greb), they are not prepared to acknowledge their greatness. As if their eyes are necessary for full validation. Comes off as ridiculously self-important, and completely lacking in ability to analyze the copious accounts of eyewitnesses, the record he compiled, the almost endless list of truly excellent scalps on his resume……

It tells us far more about them as a “historian” than it ever does about Greb (or anyone their calibrated eye hasn’t dissected).

Me neither.. his MW run is outstanding just on its own .. Walker, Gibbons, Flowers etc.. let alone the fact that he bested (multiple times by most accounts) LHW royalty in Tunney, Gibbons & Loughran.. all of whom went on to have success at HW too.. it really doesn't get much better than that. His legacy is even more impressive when you remember he was never afforded many of the advantages modern fighters have such as 8oz gloves, PEDs, more weight divisions, lower fight frequency, pre day weigh ins, standing 8 counts etc.. just imagine a MW today doing what Greb did.. that tells you how special he was.
