Biggest troll thread ever? That said Tate was damaged goods and beating him after 1980 would not be considered a path to a title fight.
I have heard that there was discussion for a comeback fight against Frank Bruno in 83 or 84. That would have been a fascinating fight, one which Ali well could have won, vaulting him back into contention.
Nevermind Bruno - Marvis was a legit contender by 83. Imagine the buildup for an Ali-Frazier Jr matchup: Ali: “Gonna whup you like I whupped your daddy!” Joe: “Avenge me, son! Avenge me!” And by 85, Leon’s brother Michael was campaigning as a heavyweight too. Ali: “I’ll whup Michael AND Leon on the same night!”
Every boxer has brain damage. He was taking heavy doses of Thyrolar to drop a lot of weight, and went from 260 to his fighting weight of 217 in a matter of weeks. It backfired and left him lethargic and weak. His effort against Holmes was not indicative of his abilities at that time.
Cmon Seamus, I know Big Frank had his limitations, but do you honestly think Ali could have beaten him at that point in time?
He does look sharp for a 40 year old with Parkinson's tbf, being that competitive with Berbick speaks to Ali's level.
