Biggest underachievers at light-heavyweight

In recent times Oleksandr Gvodzyk springs to mind.

Had a devastating win vs Stevenson and then after a losing effort vs Beterbiev in a good fight he fell of the map completely.

One would think he would've had a longer better career at Light Heavyweight.

Jesse Burnett for me was an underachiever aswell he just never got the benefit of the doubt in any of his close fights.

Looking at his record without context it seems like a journeyman record but he was very much world class.

I had him beating Conteh clearly and he was robbed of a decision.

A close loss to Galindez when he was champion.

A close loss to L.Spinks.

And so on and so on.

Had he got the benefit of the doubt in any of the decisions his career could've looked a whole lot different and he could've been champion.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad with the talent he had I feel like he fell a bit short of his potential aswell he was just too lazy at times.

 

Lloyd Marshall just scrapes into my top 20 LHW ATG list. If all his fights had been on the level, I suspect he'd be pushing for a top 10 slot.

Iirc, less than 20 of Sam Langford's 306 x bouts were technically contested at LHW, hardly any of them against world level opponents, so he gets nowhere near my top 20 at LHW, which, depending on your perspective, could be considered underachieving at LHW, given he's a consensus top 5 p4p fighter of all time and was probably a natural LHW at his peak.

 

Eddie Mustafa Muhammed is tge poster child for this. If only his desire and effort equaled his talent.

 

Agreed. Furthermore, Langford weighed inside the LHW limit for several of his major HW wins. E.g. he was 168lbs when stopping Sam McVea in the October of 1912. This bout was contested at HW (McVea was 205lbs) so contributes to Langford's HW resume.

 

Yeah not counting McVea, Tate and some of his top black opponents Langford had 78 fights against HW contenders(Ali and Louis have 41). He had like 3 or 4 at LHW. So that disparity is really big.

But heres a fun fact. Due to the French getting distracted Langford was the IBU LHW champion for 6 years without fighting at the weight class! Langford was LHW champ in 1919 based off a fight he won in 1911.

 

Always thought Chad Dawson had huge potential to be a truly great LHW. He was gifted with that hand speed and offense especially with the way he threw blistering combinations. But he was also infuriating to watch at times because he was too conservative and patient. He did have a pretty good run as champion when he beat Tarver, Hopkins, Johnson, Adamek. But there was just something missing in his arsenal that really held him back that ultimately showed when he lost against Jean Pascal. And then his decision to drop down to 168 to fight Andre Ward which clearly took something out of him and was utterly destroyed. And then got destroyed again by Adonis Stevenson and was just never the same afterwards.

 

TBH I thought Dawson was a bit unlucky vs Pascal.

If I remember rightly Pascal did outbox Dawson early on. But late on in the fight Dawson was starting to get to him.

And in the round the fight got stopped I believe from a headbutt ? Dawson did have Pascal going a bit and may of been able to possibly drop him.

 

Pascal was clearly beating him in the first 9 rounds before he started to gas and that was when Dawson was able to make a comeback and even stunned him bad. He looked like he might have been able to drop or even stop Pascal prior to the accidental headbutt but its honestly uncertain because Dawson's biggest problem has always been his lack of urgency and finishing abilities. Pascal is very tough with a lot of heart and despite getting hurt momentarily there's also a chance that he could have recovered afterwards even without the headbutt. Perhaps there was a bit of luck on Pascal's part but the fight itself was the result of Dawson not doing much until it was already too late.

 

Anthony Hembrick and Andrew Maynard both seemed like they were going to be the goods coming out of the amateurs.
