Update on boxrec has Marciano’s tallest opponent at 6”5

James Patrick Connolly no height previously listed now at 6”5. He was 213 pounds for the fight and knocked out in the first.

 

Was he a plasterer or welder? Actually in old days they put the tall guys on painting.

I knew the anti Marciano crowd would be out for blood. Makes their arguments seem more ridiculous than already stated. He wasn’t something to brag about was merely stating a fun fact.

 

At least we know height doesn’t worry him.

 

I think the idea is to say see Marciano fought guys as big as the guys today. But there are so many more big guys today that it’s far more likely to find great athletes that are also big studs. The Caneras and Abe Simons were rare freaks of nature and clumsy slow guys. It’s hard to believe that great athletes like Lennox Lewis or Klitchcos who also developed high level skills were actually just as big as those stiffs.

It was a fun fact first and foremost and even important for the Marciano never fought a modern sized crowd when he’s fought several. They certainly weren’t the most skilled of the era but it’s an interesting note that two of the three biggest men he fought were knocked out in the first. The other 6”4 1/2 formerly ranked Schkor took a little longer and was knocked out in the 6th. Size is not a skill.
