What adavantages did Frazier have over Marciano that allowed him to thrive in the 60s and 70s?

Quarry gets the same outcome vs Marciano, at best he gets 1 round and is finished by 5, either literally like the second fight, or by Dundee calling him the loser like in the first they ask Dundee if he wants Ellis to fight the winner and he's like yes we are ready to meet Frazier

 

I don't think the difference between Marciano and Frazier's amateur careers is as dramatic as people make out. Boxrec lists 18 bouts for Marciano from 1946-48, and 19 bouts for Frazier from 1963-64.

Frazier certainly had bouts that aren't listed, going back to 1962. It's often said, though without compelling evidence, that the true figure is closer to 40. But Marciano almost certainly had additional bouts as well - there's an article about him from July 1946 which says he's had 9 bouts, whereas Boxrec at that point only credits him with 3.

Frazier ultimately had the more successful amateur career of course, but again the difference isn't as overwhelming as all that. Marciano's only loss in his final year of competition was a very close decision in the Eastern Golden Gloves to tournament favourite Coley Wallace, who went on to win not only that title but the Intercity Golden Gloves and national AAU championships as well, all in the next few months.

 

1. A lot of young athletes are referent towards the ones that came before them. Not exactly a smoking gun that Frazier would say this. If Marciano came after Frazier he'd probably say the same thing.

2. "Fighters better opinions than non fighters" is dumb anti-intellectualism that fails the instant two fighters have opinions that disagree with eachother. Outsourcing your opinions to pugilistic dementia and CTE victims probably isn't a winning strategy for coming to sound conclusions.
