I'll rephrase: it's not really relevant to my point about how damaging one way rematch clauses are to boxing. It creates an unlevel playing field favoring big promoters and their fighters. How is it fair that one person only needs to win once where the other guy has to do it twice in order to move on?
Among many other unfair things. But you can even add to this one: Not only is it unfair that one has to win twice while the other only has to win once, it also keeps the underdog in limbo if he wins, because he has to wait for the decision of his opponent if he wants to enforce the rematch. I think crawford waited a long time for spences decision not to rematch him and i remember wilder suing fury half an eternity after their second fight to get the third. I think. And fan's perspective: holds up the division. I mean i criticize usyk for his stupid choice of opponent but what wilder and joshua did, specifically joshua with his rematch clauses sponsored by eddie hearn ... Not even comparable
Makhmudov was around Top 15 in the world at the time. Pringles probably isn't even Top 50. There's no comparison of levels. However, their situations are different.
Think it’s just a case of anything can happen and upsets do happen - someone you will beat 9 times out of ten might have their 1 time when you least want it - ask Lenox
It's similar when it's a voluntary defence to say how is it fair that they jump ahead of mandatories The mandatories may be waiting on that shot with a big name fighter which would earn them really good money but then to potentially have to fight a lesser known fighter for a fraction Is that fair also? Boxing isn't really a sport for fairness in all honesty I totally against a mandatory having to sign such deals tho Not overly fussed on voluntary defences
Makhmudov can't even set his feet and throw a punch correctly. He was in such a dogfight with Dave fuggin' Allen he got docked multiple points for holding. Prenga definitely hasn't fought anyone, but neither had Makhmudov. Beating old and busted Takam, maybe? Stop trying to pretend there is a huge gulf between these nobodies. There ain't. The rankings mean nothing. They're only there for the promoters to sell fights. Franklin was boosted to a Top 10 ranking with both the WBO and the WBA before fighting Itauma. Mak's claim to fame is getting smashed to pieces by anyone with a pulse and looking like a Neanderthal. He's currently ranked lower than Pringles on BoxRec.
I'm not talking about rankings of sanctioning bodies. And yes, he is now rated lower, cause he lost. That's how it works.
As it stands, there is a huge gulf between Makhmudov and Prenga. If Prenga fought Takam, Allen, Rice and Wach, how many would he win? How many stoppages and KD's would he score? Based on Prenga's record, there is no guarantee he beats any of those guys, whereas Makhmudov would have beaten everyone on Prenga's record, mostly in 1 round. Makhmudov wouldn't have done a Prenga and lost an 8 round decision to a 1-2 fighter, who has failed to win in 6 fights since and failed to beat debutants.
Honestly, it wouldn't really be that different - both are sub international level but can punch... The main difference is Hysa's been fattened up on hype ready to be fed to someone.
Exactly. It's a bit crap, but it's pretty much what you'd expect given the tragedy and the fact he's only had a comedy bout since Dubois. As much as it's not good, there are FAR worse matchups that get made without much criticism.
It's not fair, but life's not fair. Ultimately it's a supply and demand thing. Big promoters and their cashcows have a limited supply of career high paydays for more limited opponents... There are far more of those limited opponents than there are cash bouts to go around - to get the bout, compromises get made, and this is one of them. Not excusing it, just engaging with reality.
Most fighters challenging seem to love it too as it means if they beat a cash cow there's potentially a another big pay day on the horizon
Love it might be a stretch, unless it's the absolute biggest cashcow they might prefer to sell to the highest bidder... But ultimately it does pay them well twice, and realistically enhanced their name value even if they lose - it's an opportunity that they might not get otherwise, so it's hardly surprising that there's never a point where the big name fighters can't find an opponent at the kind of level they're after.
