67-66 Seldon

Underrated fight this one i've never heard anyone talk about it but it was a pretty good dust up.

Seldon showed a great jab in this fight i think his jab is up there with one of the better Heavyweight jabs i've seen. Tucker was obviously past his best and Seldon out speed him and out jabbed him closing his eye completely which lead to the stoppage.

But credit to Tucker he did make a fight of it and actually won some rounds and had Seldon in trouble in atleast 2 rounds when he stunned him with right hands.

It's unfortunate the fight had to end the way it did but Tucker's eye was completely shut and swollen badly so i can't fault the stoppage TBH.

It would've been interesting had the original fight gone through which was supposed to be Foreman/Tucker i do wonder how that would've gone.

But all in all not a bad fight at all worth watching IMO.

 

If Tucker won this would of been interesting if he could get past Joe Hipp who I assume would of been his next opponent

I thought i'd watch this since i've been on a bit of Larry Holmes binge this week.

Not really much to say about this fight two very old men way past their prime. Holmes had more left in the tank though and backed up Weaver and controlled him with his famous left jab.

What i will say is the KO was actually very impressive for a 51 year old.

The 1-2 from Holmes was lightning quick and that right hand was a beauty that finished off Weaver.

The first 4 rounds were competitive and Bey did rock Holmes a few times right hands in rounds 2 and 4. But once Holmes adjusted to Bey's style after 5th round, Holmes was in complete control from then on landing solid counter right hands as Bey slowly started to fade.

Holmes scored 2 knockdowns in the 8th round starting with a beautiful counter right hand which caused all the trouble for Bey.

The writing was on the wall from that point on and Holmes gave Bey a pasting in the 10th round and the referee rightly stepped in.

Good performance from Holmes after a bit of a slow start and a gusty effort from Bey but he was well out of his depth.

 

Worth noting that Bey earned his title shot by upsetting Greg Page.

 

Also knocked out undefeated Buster Douglas in his debut!

This was actually a better fight than i remembered it being.

The first 4 rounds it looked like it was going to be another one sided boxing lesson as Holmes was easily winning behind the jab.

But then it got a bit scary for Holmes in the middle rounds.

Bonecrusher started getting more aggressive and having success and badly cut Holmes with a headbutt which at that time was worse than the cut that Holmes had given Bonecrusher within the rules.

The fight turned into a bit more of a slugfest which Bonecrusher wanted and Holmes also took a pretty nasty looking right hand in the 8th round that buckled him.

So for 3 or 4 rounds it was looking a bit worrying for Holmes until the 10th round he finally regained control of the fight moving and jabbing. He also opened up Bonecrusher's cut even worse and now Bonecrusher was the one with the worst cut and was on borrowed time.

The stoppage was a good one IMO Holmes was in control of the fight and the cut was pretty nasty looking so no arguments at all from.

All in all a better fight than i remembered and one of Holmes's better fights towards the end of his reign. And Holmes showing once again good composure in a crisis.

Boy, how hard to score is this fight! I counted 9 rounds that could have gone either way and 3 clear rounds for each guy. Ali edged it on my card, but in my opinion it's a draw all the way. Don't see a controversy in this one either. Watching the fight with closed circuit commentary, 3 journalists couldn't agree regarding majority of the rounds who actually won them. One of those fights. Both men gave their all.

Holmes improves to 46-0. Smith, who earned his shot with his come-from-behind upset knockout of Frank Bruno, falls to 14-2.

5: Smith 10-9 (James gets aggressive and decides to walk through Holmes’ offense, lands a few hard right hands and some good body work too)

8: Smith 10-9 (close, they go toe to toe for much of the round and Bonecrusher hurts Larry with a right, followed by some great exchanges)

11. Holmes 10-9 (really opens up and opens up a cut over Smith’s left eye like a can of tomatoes — it was there earlier but late in the round doctor has to take a look it’s so bad)

Larry pummels Smith a good bit in this round as the blood continues to flow. Ringside doctor stops it at 2:10 of the 12th after ref asks him to look at it again.

Final scorecard: Holmes 108-101

Good action fight while also being pretty tactical. Good showing from a still-green Bonecrusher but Larry is too much.

 

Watched Ray Leonard vs Bruce Finch lost night, Leonard’s final fight before his early first retirement with a detached retina.

1 — Finch 10-9: Bruce comes out frisky, but not in a reckless, kamikaze way. He does some good body work with straight rights and a nice left hook and also gets through with a couple rights to the head. Ray begins to get his jab on track and scores with a couple glancing rights but not enough.

2 — Leonard 10-7: Finch continues as the aggressor and gets Ray on the ropes, where he again scores well to the body and also gets a few crisp rights through the guard. Then Leonard storms back, unleashing fury to punch his way off the ropes. Finch looks wobbly and gets dropped by a clean right set up by a left hook. Ray scores another knockdown and seems on the verge of ending it when the bell rings.

3 — Bruce still looks unstable as the round begins. He seems like he’s starting to settle in, but Leonard ups the ante a drops him again. He barely beats the count on unsteady legs and ref Mills Lane stops it.

 

Antonio Cervantes (c) vs Aaron Pryor, scheduled for 15 rounds for the WBA junior welterweight championship on Aug. 2, 1980, at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Kid Pambele, 139 1/4, is 63-10-1 in his second reign as champ, the legendary Colombian winning back his title after losing it to Wilfredo Benitez and claiming the vacant crown when Wilfredo moved up to welter.

Pryor, 138 1/2, is largely untested at 24-0 and fighting before a hometown crowd.

1 — Cervantes 10-8: Aaron charges across the ring and unloads with a barrage, but Pambele is a cool customer. He blocks, parries and slips most of the Hawk’s wild shots and finds well-timed counter rights and left hooks. He nails Aaron with a straight right and drops him for a flash knockdown. Pryor pops up and winds his arm bolo-style and charges right back in, but lands little except for a few straight rights to the body.

2 — Cervantes 10-9: Similar to the first with no knockdown. Pryor has a nice spurt with about a minute left but mostly Antonio’s defense and counters carry the round.

3 — Pryor 10-9: Aaron’s ruthless aggression and whirling dervish attack begins to pay dividends and he starts landing more and keeping Cervantes off-balance. He opens up a nasty cut over Pambele’s right eye and it emboldens Pryor and gives Antonio pause. Although Antonio continues to time some sharp counters, he’s beginning to look overwhelmed. Aaron, however, looks pretty arm-weary by round’s end.

4 — Pryor continues his Tasmanian Devil assault, quickly reopening the cut. He is getting through with heavy shots and Cervantes cannot keep him off. Aaron drives Pambele to the ropes and unloads a barrage, capped by a right hand that puts his man down for the count at 1:47.

Official cards: 28-26, 29-26, 29-27, all for Cervantes (EDIT: I originally had this as all for Pryor and edited when I realized my mistake. I cannot for the life of me figure out the 28-26 score, if correct as reported by boxrec).

Thanks to @Flo_Raiden for bringing this to our attention. Fantastic fight. Loved the back and forth. Fuentes had a severe cut from the first round that one would never think could last but despite several visits to the doctor, the fight continued. For me, I felt Lopez' shots were of the arm variety. He could not match the hefty wallops that Fuentes was dispensing. I was clearly not as generous to Lopez as the officials were, as they had it close. Worth a watch, guys.

Berbick was awkward very spirited and game but in most of the rounds Holmes comprehensively outboxed Berbick at range showing off that tremendous jab.

Berbick had his best success when he was able to smother Holmes and land body shots. But unfortunately for him he wasn't able to do that in most of the rounds because he was getting his head jabbed off.

I was also impressed with Berbick's chin he took some fully fledged straight right hands from Holmes and took them very well. Berbick is actually pretty tough unless you get him out of there early he normally sticks around and is not the easiest guy to put away.

The most exciting round of the fight was the 15th round plenty of toe to toe action a bit like a poor mans version of Norton/Holmes.

Overall a solid fight and a workmanlike performance from Holmes against an awkward strong game challenger in Berbick.

Bey gave it a go early and rattled Holmes a couple of times with his unorthodox haymakers. But once Holmes settled down to the job at hand, it was a matter of time because once Bey showed everything in his arsenal Holmes just put him in the crosshairs and began setting him up with the jab and sharp-shooting with the right. In the end, Bey had nothing but courage against a very talented champ.

 

Seems Holmes has a lot of interesting fights to score.
