One of the more sensible posts on here.

    That’s how bad it is.

Moore fought Buster Drayton over 3 years later.

Moore was rated the second best 154 in the world when he and Duran fought.

That version of Duran gave Hagler a somewhat competitive bout over 15 rounds and broke his knockout streak.

Povetkin is not better than that Duran.

You are a time waster, with silly thoughtless comments that quite a few put down to trolling.

Johnny Boy why don't you take a crack at what I brought up earlier.

Please explain why this was such a big win. Duran was 33 years old fighting someone almost 7 years younger. Had 5 losses already. Fighting a guy that is more than half a foot taller than him with a 12' reach advantage. Had already been stopped. Was 3-3 in his last 6 fights.

I was 13 days old at the time so I don't understand the sentiment behind this fight.

It wasn't worth a response tbf. If you've been on the forum for 15 years and don't know better at this point you are never going to. Myriads of younger posters than yourself have been able to piece it together, guys like Rough, George, Loak etc. Despite being around 20 or whatever they are elite level posters among the best worldwide. Age was no barrier. Admittedly you have to have the time and dedication as well as the smarts, not everyone has it.

OK so I will give my opinion.

BE is clearly shaking the cage around here, but there's a grain of truth in what he's saying. This comparison is not as far out as it seems, and while I think Hearns over Duran is better, Wlad over Povetkin does have a lot of shine to it also.

Povetkin at the time was seen as the single biggest threat to Wlad. He was smack bang in his prime, and he was a ferocious combination puncher at close range, the sort that a lot of people seem to think would give Wlad fits. A great chin and grit, unbeaten. Wlad utterly dominated him and made the fearless warrior gunshy after dropping him three times. Even so, Povetkin went unbeaten for something like 5 years afterwards and racked up some decent wins thereafter. Sasha was the real deal.

Duran had had a whole pile of fights including some gruelling ones. He was coming off a loss and was fighting at a weight where he was not optimal; he was never really a true middleweight. Stylistically he did not match up well to Hearns, whose ranginess, power and speed were always going to be problematic for him.

So put in context the comparison is not as outlandish as it seems.

What really puts Hearns beating Duran over the top for me is the emphatic manner in which it was done. One might very reasonably expect an ATG like Duran to find a way to give Hearns a hard fight. He was a very skilled and tough hombre. But Hearns switched him off like the christmas tree lights on the 26th December. Whereas Wlad could likewise have put his pedal to the metal and gotten rid of Povetkin after KDing him 3 times. Instead he was happy to oil wrestle his way to a UD.

You keep saying that you were 13 days old.

    So?

That means you are now 42.

And you’ve apparently been a member here now for 15 years.

Like John says, you have no excuse, and we can only assume that you’re trolling.

    This is a good post.

To me, we also have to factor in Wlad’s manner of victory.

If he’d have fought him impressively, then he’d have gotten huge credit.

But that performance was truly awful.

He didn’t even box for most of the fight.

At the very least i would favor Hearns, McCallum and Duran over Moore. Moore's win over Benitez was post Duran and among his best performances so it's not like he was shot.

Is Povetkin better than Laing and Sims? You seem to be selling him a bit short.

Duran is an ATG and he'd never been flattened like that in 119 fights despite fighting his last fight at age 50.

So the manner in which Hearns won and the fact Duran is an ATG considered a top 10 fighter of all time it's an outstanding win.

You are also simplifying Duran's win/loss record without context.

Duran was coming off a stand out win vs Moore in which he looked back to his best.

He was also coming off a very credible performance vs a prime ATG Middleweight in Hagler in which he was ahead after 12 rounds on the judges scorecards.

So to answer the question the manner in which Hearns brutally flattened Duran in 2 rounds. And the fact Duran is considered a top 10 fighter of all time it's a very historical win.
