Rocky Marciano vs the great Jimmy Young

I like Jimmy. Rocky was on the slow side while Jimmy had wins over Lyle, Foreman, Ali, and Norton among others.

 

Depends on who’s judging really. Marciano would be the aggressor and actively pursuing Young. This may help him on the cards. Judges weren’t always thrilled with Jimmy’s elusive style . Of course there’s also the prospect of a knockout but it’s probably not likely. Young was very hard for even the best fighters to land flush on. And he was durable besides. He’d also have quite a bit of size on Rocky

And some of you all don’t figure it in hardly at all. If weight means so little why are there weight divisions?
If there were no weight divisions only heavyweights would be champions.

 

Weight does not mean little, you're simply severely overestimating it's meaning.

 

Not at all weight is just a very imporant part of the equation. What me and other realists are trying to do is get people to understand that you have quality fighters who are also much bigger as you move to more recent times. People are under estimating the importance because they’re clinging to the image of their hero’s they grew up with and don’t want to see reality. If a 182 pounder can compete and beat the modern super heavyweight champions show me some that have in the last 40 years.

 

Weight is important but how fighters match up stylistically is more important aswell.

Young weighs a bit more than Marciano but the weight difference is nowhere close to overcoming the major stylistic advantage Marciano has in this fight.

Young is a safety first defensive fighter who is a mediocre puncher at best.

Marciano is a swarmer and that style is poison for safety first defensive boxers. Unless they have the power to stop the forward momentum of the swarmer which Young doesn't.

So stylistically Marciano is a considerable favourite in this fight.

Liston for example weighs similar to Young but that doesn't necessarily mean they are the same size and strength or with the same stylistic issues.

Liston is a very big boned strong individual and his style with being a very big puncher who's physically very strong is going to be poison for a smaller swarmer like Marciano.

So whilst I do believe size difference is important you have to look at the styles aswell.

And stylistically Young doesn't have any advantages in this match up.

 

Lastarza was inferior to Young in every aspect of boxing imo,he lost a disputed decision ,and was stopped on his feet in the 11th round of their second fight with Rocky.
I have never been a Young fan, but he has a chance here.

 

Nobody has suggested that Young hit harder than Rocky.
But Young beat Foreman and Lyle, and drew with Shavers,and I'd say they hit at least as hard as Rocky!

Since Satterfield,Patterson,Johansson,and Langford never fought Young,I don't see the relevance of their names being mentioned?
