How would a Bob Foster versus Michael Spinks playout?

That only goes to show that he was, in fact, a light heavyweight and did not belong in a higher weight class.

 

Foster has an inch on Spinks but Michael I think was better skilled and awkward. And that would help him win a close UD in a 15 rounder.

 

If they had a cruiser division at the time he probably would have been there no one fought LH unless they had to there was no money in it in those days. He fought top heavyweight contenders as a young guy and lost decisions think to Machen and Jones and Terrell stopped him. Ernie was number 1 contender even wba champ eventually. So he was fighting top guys and he was still developing. He went back down to LH improved dominated and became an all-time LH. Then moved up a much better fighter then his previous foray into heavy’s and runs into Ali and Frazier no disgrace losing to them.

 

Spinks for me. Hea the better fighter IMO

I am with you, all though Foster made numerous defenses, the likes of , De Paula, Tessman, Hicks, Anderson, Kendall, were not setting the world on fire, the fighters Spinks beat were of much higher calibre, so I grew up in the Foster era, and the memories still linger, but imo Spinks will bring too much to the table, and I can see Bob being stopped or KOd late in the fight, sadly....

I watched as Foster fought his first televised bout. He fought Doug Jones as a late fill-in, very early in his career, and put up a good fight before getting knocked out in round eight. I remember Don Dunphy, who called the bout, seemed impressed with the youngster's performance. My lord, that was 64 years ago!

Subsequently I don't remember any light heavyweight giving Foster much trouble but the money he earned from those 175-pound contests didn't satisfy him so he would occasionally take matches with heavyweights to make more dough. Usually he would lose those bouts because he lacked the strength or the whiskers. Spinks was decisively better than Foster fighting against the big boys and I think if the two could've fought each other Spinks would prove superior. He would definitely be favored by the oddsmakers.
