Idk, but I think you might just be going off of name recognition rather than watching the fights. There is no way Charles would have been able to take Botha's punches for an entire fight. Valentino was successful going to the body on Charles and Botha was doing well going to the body on Moorer so Charles would be in trouble. Botha was able to take Moorer's punches for almost the entire fight. I highly doubt Charles would have been able to stop him or get the decision.

 

What is the problem now?

 

Tommy Burns once fought Philadelphia Jack O'Brien for the heavyweight crown when both were under the LHW limit at the time, so...

 

I really don't get that mindset. Why shouldn't it matter? Should we ignore obvious things just because it makes past fighters look better? If Usyk beat a lineup of guys who weighed 175-190 at heavyweight nobody would call that an impressive HW resume. But because Charles did it 70 years ago suddenly size doesn't matter? We don't apply that standard to modern fighters so why are we applying it to Charles?

 

Additionally, Louis had more than 2 years of inactivity when he fought Charles without any tune-up. This isn't a great win.

 

I think you should rewatch the Moorer vs. Botha fight as well as the Charles vs. Valentino fight to see where I am wrong. A 182lb. fighter fighting a 224lb. fighter is a substantial difference. That's more than the difference between Lightweight and Light Heavyweight, but that's not going to make a difference?

 

But they don't matter here. Charles was a heavyweight when heavyweight started at 175+. In his day, that is an actual heavyweight. For the purposes of comparing Vitali and Charles at heavyweight, the weight of their opponents is irrelevant - they were all heavyweights.

Oh my bad, I forgot to mention that it was on a ten days notice and it's Vitali's second best opponent.

Being the closest man to taking Joe Louis' titie does wonderful things for your career. As does having a rivalry with the next champion.
