I'm looking forward to being able to support Wlad in a thread again soon (it's been a while). But David Benavidez is being fantasy matched against everyone... ....except Wlad.

 

It's because you don't have any clue about the era. McCallum's career didn't really fire until he KO'd Curry. It was his last fight ever at 154. He hadn't really beaten anybody at that point. Julian Jackson was an absolute unknown when they fought. He struggled with McCrory who Curry had decimated in minutes. He stunk the place out vs Mannion and received plenty of criticism.

By the time he beat Curry (who was on the comeback trail after getting beaten by Honeyghan) and became somewhat marketable Hearns was 2 years post Hagler and beating Andries at 175. Hearns may not have even known who Kalambay was lol. By the time Nunn even won the title Hearns never made 160 again. They were different divisions lol. Arum put an offer to the Hearns camp before Nunn had a title, Hearns was already lined up for Barkley and lost the title at any rate.

You have to live the era's or study them back to front.

 

Isn't he the one everyone reckons Canelo ducked for ages? I see he's now won the cruiserweight title. Maybe Canelo did do some serious Mallard work.

 

On it's face, that's the strong impression out there.

It’s speculation based upon the available evidence.

He was knocked out 3 times by non elite fighters, at various points of his 20’s.

He was dropped 3 times by a crude Sam Peter.

He couldn’t legitimately fight Povetkin.

Tyson Fury did a complete psyche job on him in and out of the ring, to the point where they went feint for feint, where Wlad couldn’t fight him aggressively and let his hands go. And he wasn’t shot, as evidenced in his later fight with AJ, where he could fight aggressively and let his hands go.

Yes, he was still a great fighter who deserves respect.

However, it is highly unlikely that he could have dominated a better era, with better fighters.

He could probably have done okay in the 90’s. But there’s nothing to suggest that he could have dominated it in the same manner as he dominated from 2004-2015.

 

This needs to be discussed in a multi-thread series to really be fleshed out and appropriately analyzed.

 

Yes good point about him vs AJ, he was still in good shape for Fury, just like a rabbit in the headlights when he fought a decent boxer

 

It was extraordinary to watch what happened when Wlad's primary weapon (the clinch) was taken away from him. Without that crutch, he became offensively inert. No imagination, no invention, no inclination.

It was as if he had forgotten how to box.


Somehow, I doubt the same thing would ever have happened to Hearns.

 

So Wlad fits perfectly into this description as he fought everybody and dominated for almost 10 years barely losing a round.
