Update on boxrec has Marciano’s tallest opponent at 6”5

I will make another observation.

Despite his high ranking, Cockell is the outlier among Marciano's title challengers.

Walcott, LaStraza, Charles .and Moore, were all picked by Marciano's team, because they had strong credentials as challengers.

They were all #1 contenders, and in some cases there were unfinished business angles.

Cockell was basically picked to be a challenger who was not particularly dangerous.

Marciano's nose had been busted up in the second Charles fight, and they wanted a tune up.

It was lucky for them that the #2 contender was tailor made for their needs, and if he had not been, they would have settled for say the #7 contender.

 

Did anyone give Cockell ,the 5/1 outsider, even a ghost of a chance?
No!

Even so the Marciano team put the fight in a 16foot ring. Marciano was down right dirty in that fight,but not warned once ,and Cockell was on his feet when the fight was stopped.

I take your point. Mine is Cockell did not belong anywhere near the top of the rankings, and neither did Lastarza.How many top ten fighters did either /both of them beat?

My point is that a man Cockell's physical limitations and abilities sniffing a ranking in the heavyweight class means your era is desperately wanting.

 

It was a gimmee defence that should have gone to Valdes,or another more deserving opponent.

 

Show me where Bucceroni who also beat Lastarza,and Brion were ranked when Lastarza beat them?
Lastarza survived 2 rounds more than Cockell.
Lastarza was a protected fighter who was kept well away from the," iron" of the division.
