Gentleman Jim Corbett was a clerk. Gene Tunney was known for being a literate man. Primo Carnera spoke four languages. Most of the heavyweights up until a certain point were fairly articulate. It depends how you define smart? Smartly dressed? Most boxers don't wear suits and refrain from profrane language in interviews anymore. Back in the day alot of these men actually made an effort to sound intelligent and look presentable.
Not saying he was the smartest ever, but Bonecrusher Smith was the first heavyweight champion with a college degree. That’s a nice feather in his cap (and gown).

That fact is so mind blowing to me. Heavyweight boxing has such an extraordinarly overwhelmingly working class selection pool that it took over 100 years for a single belt holder to have a college degree. I don't even think this has been replicated in the 40 years since. I've never seen anything confirming the Klitschko's have degrees. I remember trying to fact check it and there being dead ends. If they do I think they're honourary.
