Davison doesn't have a crystal ball and considering Wardley's previous come from behind performances, the fact that Wardley was world champion and also the fact that Wardley wanted to continue, he left it in the referee's hands. I thought Wardley looked like he still had spark and Dubois looked vulnerable even in the 10th round.
His previous comeback wins were against feather fisted Parker and Hunni. Dubois ****ed him up last night and was never really in danger from round 4 onwards. Like you say those previous fights probably came in to the decision making but Wardley was badly exposed last night and his corner should have done him a favour. He could barely walk.
Wardley was the champion and he was still swinging. Imagine the uproar if the fight had been stopped early. Its harsh but its a fight, its war wardley is a gladiator let him go out on his shield. Good stoppage imo gave him evey chance, someones always going to moan either way.
Everything is easy to criticize in hindsight. Under the circumstances though, considering Wardley's ability to come from behind, he was the world champion, he wanted to continue plus he also scored two knockdowns earlier in the contest. If these multi-millionaire world champions want to leave it all in the ring, I say leave it up to the ref and ringside doctor to make the decision to stop the fight if need be.
Huni was up by 9 rounds on the cards... Huni should have just played it safe to a decision.. Huni's corner sucked that fight
It's the double standard from officials that is the problem. Joe Parker was slipping most punches and come back with pitter patter flurries, that wasn't deemed good enough. Fabio had his nose caved and in and was taking flush shots and he was given EVERY opportunity to continue. Davison should have also thrown the towel in the 9th. Dubois may have been gassing but Wardley had zero mechanism of landing a power punch.
I remember late on in that fight between rounds they put the camera on Huni's corner and they were telling Huni to push for the stoppage. Your man has beat seven shades of crap out Wardley, won every round, and you're telling him to try to finish the guy? When your man is known to be chinny and Wardley is a big puncher? Insanity. Reminds me of a Tom Brady quote where he said "There are a lot of glorified P.E. coaches in the NFL." Lots of boxing trainers/coaches are absolutely clueless. They have absolutely no ability to analyze how a fight is going, what state both fighters are in, and what the correct advice to give their fighter is. It's gotten so bad that a lot of the time it's just multiple people yelling conflicting instructions.
I’ve spent time watching Ben with fighters in the gym and dressing room, I’ve even been in the opposite corner from him. I know this gives my opinion no more credence than anyone else’s here but I actually rate him highly. Freddie Roach is 66, Abel Sanchez 69, Buddy McGirt 61, Virgil Hunter 71, Derek James 54 and Eddie Reynoso 49 to name but a few. Ben is only 32 in comparison but when he calls it a day his CV will compare favourably, if not surpass all of these guys.
I agree Davison is bad, Wardley's performance was absolutely dreadful. He pawed with the left hand then threw wild amateurish overhand rights that missed by feet for the whole fight. .As for Davison, sending Fabio staggering out of his corner late in the fight half blind was pathetic.
This. Davison's track record proves he's a capable trainer. It's easy to criticize someone when their guy takes a loss, but every great trainer in the history of boxing has faced similar losses.
How did they never give Fabio an alternative to an overhand, to set the overhand, like changing levels, or feinting it into a left hook. Honestly feels like they were happy he is winning and just didn't bother to add too much.
Spot on. You cant stop Parker for that then allow Wardley to take what he did last night. Exactly why these refs should be chased out the sport. Been a long time pattern of the home fighter or the one the promoter wants to win getting every benefit. A lot of the time results in the home fighter taking unneccessary damage. Boxing too dangerous a sport to let any bias get in the way.
They probably did but its not easy to get it working against a top level opponent. Add to that i think Dubois power started draining him as soon as it started landing. The gameplan usually goes out the window when your concussed and drained imo. Probably buzzed for most of the fight.
Howard Foster was the ref for Dubois vs Lerena Fabio vs Michael Polite Coffie Fabio vs J-Park And Fabio vs Dubois He waved the Lerena fight off at the bell at the end of round 3 after Dubois dropped Lerena, after allowing Dubois to touch down x 3 in round 1, instead of giving Lerena a chance to return to his corner and recover during the 60 second interval He dived in an waved the Coffie fight off when Fabio had unleashed an attack on him with most of the punches missing and Coffie in no trouble at all He waved the J-Park fight off early in many people's eyes when J-Park was still defending himself and seemingly in control of his faculties He allowed Fabio to continue after taking a terrible beating, was running on fumes, and still on wobbly legs whilst coming out for the start of the round
