Recency bias is insane, ESB has turned into "Any HW who just won a fight could beat Ali"

It's not just heavyweights there were people on here anointing Shakur Stevenson as an ATG for beating Teo Lopez.

 

As time has gone on Muhammad Ali has become more and more beatable. If Henry Cooper could put Ali on the canvas then any current fighter with a decent left hook could do the same. A lot of the conversation centers around the part of Ali's career which came after his 43 months away from boxing. The fact is that, through necessity, post-exile Ali was a completely different boxer than the pre-exile version. Guys like Norton, Lyle and Shavers would have had almost no chance to win aginst 1966 Muhammad Ali. Even prime Frazier would have struggled mightily.

I'm just short of seventy years old and I have seen this same phenomonon happen to Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey. Rocky Marciano is currently in the process of joining those legends who have gone from being all-time greats to boxers considered beatable by fans of today's good but not great heavyweights simply because of their size.

I agree. How many threads did we have on Dubois yesterday? A joke. It is a weak era many reckon it's strong its not.

 

I don't think a lot of this generation understands just how great Ali's accomplishments were. He beat more great fighters than any other heavy, and his resume is so good that his third-tier guys would be a hell of a reign for most.

 

Ali vs Dubois would look like Ali vs Cleveland Williams.

 

Honestly, best staying away for a week after a popular fight happens. Surprised no one has said Zak Chelli vs Roy Jones Jr yet.

People are nuts. But I think that's more a mexican America fighter thing where they latch onto any teet, same thing happened with Canelo despite him being a plodding roided bum himself.

Bring back Chavez sr's and Duran's. Make boxing great again.

 

I agree. The sport of boxin has taken a turn for the worse.

 

People get caught up with debatest over his status as a public figure, but just as a fighter, he had arguably two seperate ATG careers, which insane. You can say the same about Manny Pacquaio, but It's a much different game at HW and more difficult.

 

Imagine if this forum was around after Ali-Cleveland Williams.

 

Ali was beaten 5 times in a very limited era (basically an American league, with smaller heavies, almost no southpaws, inferior science), and even that greatly flatters him as without the A-side officiating, it could have been 10+ losses.

Obviously he was a great but flawed fighter who could be beaten by others beyond Frazier, Norton and Holmes. Ali is a myth as much or more than he was a boxer.
