I've been following the game of boxin for 35 years worked with and met some of the world's best. ATM it's at an all time low. Too many paper champions. Look at David Nyika and what Jai Opteai did to him. Yet he's one win away from fighting for that strap which Jai got stripped from. He was out cold. He's not even worthy to fight in a world title eliminator. Manny pacman fought a d drew with another paper champion who didn't win a fight to become champ nor to defend it. Tim tszyu fighting a guy who hasn't fought for 3 years in another world title eliminator. Tszyu has lost 3 world title fights he doesn't deserve a 4th I've been his biggest fan. His brother has fought nobodies look at how high up he's ranked. Boxing's all about money and who you know not how good you are. There's some good talent out there that never get a shot without the financial backing. Boxing has taken a significant decline atm.
It's the same in terms of finances in every era Promotors don't take many risks or push people with no real returns That has always been the case Like I say, if your not enjoying it maybe don't consume it for awhile Boxing has never been perfect and never will There's some great contests happening recently and in the future You just seem to focus on the negative aspects here Jai fights in a terrible division so it's hardly surprising the talent pool gets another chance Manny and the Barrios fight was just the WBC being the WBC It's awful but if you analyse previous eras you'll find champions just as bad I mean personally if I look at something and think it's crap, I just don't watch it But I've watched two fantastic fights in the last 10 days so I'm content
Equally it was at the time critised by boxing media as not being as good as previous eras I read plenty of articles with such a tone But I enjoyed it, I don't need to listen to pundits and journalism to convince me of either opinion
I think Tim would have been a much better champion if Uncle Boris had gone the smart route in Fundora 1 NC. It seems to have added a microsecond of second guessing into his attack, just open enough to be easily clipped by a gun counter puncher. It was still there against Nurja, and if Spence is even a shadow of his younger self he should sit Tim down. Am I wrong in thinking Tim's defence was better when he was younger?
I agree. If that gets called a NC tims whole career is different. His defence was shot after that fight. He did eat a lot of jabs vs Harrison though. But not power shots.
I gotta agree with you, the big leagues in little Oz are NRL & AFL. They have both been changed to be faster with less heavy contact and now athletes bodies do no cope with physical demands and the best players are regularly injured. Bankers running sport, fkn wankers. Any spots left on the ancient geezer's board?
Jabs were all Tony had, I think I remember one right from him all fight. That was a terrible match up for a title fight, Harrison looked like a mug with a fast powder puff jab and I thought at the time he was fighting with a damaged hand, but no idea. Actually all of tbe Americans he fought before Fundora were terrible; and Tim was confident and sticking to his plan because he had nothing coming at him to adapt to. I think it had been a No Limit silver spoon ride up until Fundora. Then it came apart and ended with the ignominy of retiring on his stool. I question if this next bout is two guys with championship aspirations, or a pre retirement pay day? I guess we'll see; meanwhile the real champion, Jai the guy, has been treated abysmally. I dunno how old you are NC, but I was introduced to TV Ringside on our dodgy old B&W TV by my old man when I was pretty young, five or six I guess, and fell in love with boxing. It ran from the late 1960s into the 70s and there must be videos online, and they would be worth watching, despite the shitty video. My favourites were Hec Thompson and "Wild" Matt Ropus. Mundine's old man, Tony, fought too. Good times mate & no fkn PPV. Ali Blockbusters were live and free to air. The world stopped when Ali fought by the way, and most knew about it, these days most people couldn't name an active boxer.
You can check Ring Mafgazine archives f.e. 90's were being shyte on when they were happening and Lewis was not even considered ATG when he was retiring.
I agree about Harrison, previous opponents no limit and Tim. Harrison has done what exactly since that fight? He's slurring words. Granted Tim gave him a beating. He wasn't world class though. I'm not from your era mate but it sounds great. I think Tyson fights as ALi in the 80's? To some degree. Spence is coming back for the money a d perhaps for the love of it. Tim wants the cash and a world title. He's not world clasd anymore though.
Tyson kept doing stupid things which blunted his fame, Ali was a lot bigger, his every word was quoted. Tyson was more infamous than famous, his image is mellow now, but media portrayed him as an animal back in the day, and he acted it at times.
