Just looking through some old Boxing News magazines (papers) from the early 2000s. Here's a quote from a article from June 2002. " Hasim Rahman's camp claim they counted 15 butts from Evander Holyfield in their WBA title eliminator this month. Apparently Rahman's awful swelling over the left eye actually increased following the match and days later Hasim could not see out of that eye. Team Rahman are appealing for a rematch (to the WBA) on their plan was to take Holyfield into the later rounds" Any outstanding memories from Holyfield Vs Raham?
In that fight Holyfield used the most effective headbutt counter to a right hand that you will ever see.
It was actually a very good fight besides the headbutts. Holy at 40 did look better than in any of the Ruiz fights, and Rahman was also in a great shape. Rahman landed couple of hard clean right hands to the chin but Holy didn't blink. Evander won more rounds and looked like he's going to win the fight until the headbutt came. It looked weird and was increasing in size quickly so the fight was stopped.
King was trying to line up the winner against the winner of Lewis-Tyson or more importantly Tyson if he won since they all fought for Showtime except for Lewis. Holyfield looked good but by now he was a serial headbutt artist being exposed as such. Rahman's goiter was one of the worst I've seen in boxing. Can't believe he endured that enswell scraping his lump like that.
I love Evander, because he's an awesome boxer, but no living person has made more of a career out of misunderstanding Sir Mix-a-Lot.
I think everyone s memory of that fight was the giant knot Rahman had. It gave an early ending to what was otherwise a good fight.I think it was gonna be even better down the streth.Rahman was abour 225 lbs for that one,he came i ngreat shape against a pushing 40 Commander Vander.
Much like Tyson, Rahman was throwing obvious, blatant, stupid headbutts and it cost him. Rahman was coming in with his head again and Holyfield saw it again.
I used to love looking through my old Boxing Monthly s, every single one from 1989 -2009 , and just reading old articles. I ended up moving tho and gave away the full lot ( like a Fool!)
Yes it would have been interesting if we had got a Holyfield or Raham trilogy. This was at a time when belts were being fragmented again as Lewis didn't face John Ruiz for the WBA or Chris Byrd for the IBF. Lewis was still the top heavyweight however this was all start of the lead up to having multiple heavweight titlists and champions in Lewis's absence.
Yes Tyson even admitted he was throwing in headbutts first and Holyfield just retailiated with his own.
I've got a Boxing Monthly from 1999 for lead up to Lewis Vs Holyfield the predictions for he fight were quite surprising. I've always read Boxing News more though. Just going through some old ones at the moment! I know you have let a load of stuff go when you move mate.
