Recency bias is insane, ESB has turned into "Any HW who just won a fight could beat Ali"

No boxer in history gives Ali a ‘beatdown’. Fury’s gas tank was the only thing that stopped him beating Usyk. It was still close. But Usyk gives the Greatest a beatdown ?

 

Well I did say good but not great fighters. Usyk is obviously great and would do well against men from any era.

Usyk had competitive fights vs Chisora, Joshua 2, Fury 1 & 2.

I suppose a prime Ali wouldn't do as good as them ?

Ali beat over 30+ ranked fighters and beat 2 Heavyweights who are amongst the top 10 Heavyweights of all time.

Suggesting Usyk beats down Ali is disrespectful and a totally clueless comment.

Even Usyk himself the knowledgeable humble man he is would say you're talking nonsense.

 

Unfortunately recency bias is just the way things are among today's fight fans. And its not just the heavyweights either. What I want to know is what are today's fight fans going to do when their kids and grandkids are talking about how the fighters of thirty or forty years from now are better than their heroes of today. Somehow I doubt they'll agree with them.

 

Damazion Vanhouter beat Raphael Murphy four days ago. Therefore clearly could beat Ali.

 

Every fighter in history has flaws which certain fighters can exploit.

Silly, silly prediction based upon nothing.

Look at their attributes.

Look at the stylistic match up.

Equal size.

Equal weight.

Both mobile fighters, with just respectable power.

Ali was significantly faster.

They would have gone feint for feint in a chess match.

Usyk has done nothing to suggest a beatdown.

One ignorant opinion doesn’t speak for all of us.

Look at the HW division of the early 90’s.

The MW division.

The late 90’s WW/JMW divisions.

They were on another level than today.

 

Unless a person lived through it, they don't understand the phenomenon Ali was. The planet stopped and watched every second he fought, and it was 15 round fights then.

 

It's not one ignorant opinion. It was a consensus back then. 90's were being shitted on all over the place by the old heads. Now, the old heads are those, who love the 90's. It's impossible to properly evaluate the era when it's happening. The time for the dust to settle is very important.

 

Obviously it’s more than just one opinion.

But consensus?

We had some frustrating times, with certain big fights which didn’t get made.

However, we were treat to a great decade, with lots of great fights.

Nobody said it was weak with the 90’s stars that we had.

Even the lower weight classes were popular.

I lived through the era.

It was great.

 

Yes, we were treated to a great decade and now we appreciate it. It wasn't the case in the 90's when the HW division with their biggest stars were widely critisized. Lennox wasn't even considered an ATG when he was retiring and he was the best out of the 90's. I lived through the 2015-24 and it was widely critisized as well, but I thought it was great. The jury is still out on this one tho historically.

I grew up watching Tito-Oscar and MAB-Morales etc.

I used to buy the magazines too, and order VHS videos from the AD sections.

This was the consensus at the time. Either you forgot or you didn’t follow the American boxing media back then. I feel like kids growing up watching boxing today feel the same way kids watching in the 90s did: that all the hate toward the current era is overblown. The 90s had plenty of terrible moments too, but time heals wounds and people become nostalgic. I remember hating Lewis, Bowe, and Moorer for whatever reason, but now I’m very fond of them and appreciate what they brought to the division.

This era will probably get the same love in 20 years. Truthfully, the peak of the Saudi era has been the best heavyweight scene I’ve personally watched. The one thing the 90s was miles ahead in was accessibility. There was far more boxing available for free. Today people praise things like ProBox TV, but in the 90s there were multiple better versions of that available on regular television. PPVs were much rarer, and you could usually watch top fighters compete regularly without paying extra every time.

 

I’m English.

I appreciated it all.

Almost every division had stars in it.

I don’t even recognise today’s MW and SMW scene.

You can never please everyone.

But I wouldn’t say that it was the consensus in Britain.
