Real fun fight that some of you might not have seen. Matty Dickinson V Matty Clarkson LHW British title fight from 2014, which you can find on Youtube, best I've ever seen in person. 6 or 7 knockdowns from memory.

One that sticks in my mind was the tumultuous struggle from Les Picket to erase a big lead from the smooth boxing Vernon Sollas, it had everything, excellent boxing skills from the featherweight Conteh, up against the dour, tough, resilient Picket, the Londoner boxed like a dream, swift accurate jabs, fast hurtful combos, the plodding Picket was shipping a lot punishment, handed out by the opulent silky skilled boxer, that was Sollas, round after round Sollas beat a totoo of punches on the battered face of the brave but totally outclassed Welshman, it was getting to the stage were you wanted the ref to step in, then all of a sudden the energy and stamina started to wilt, like the sand from a hourglass, Sollas was imploding, he was gasping for air, the arms that were so busy and effective looked like they weighed a tonne, the eyes were vacant, Sollas was a fighter in treacle, like that nightmare where you can't seem to run away from danger, Picket through swollen and cut eyes, saw the phantoms strength, start to disappear, is this really happening he must have thought, it most certainly was, and now is nemesis was looking all to frail, one more push in the last round and the prize was his, the unfancied, regular, sub champion that he was , coming on like the proverbial train, the ref, the compassionate ref rescued Sollas, as well he should, the bull had won over the matador, it doesn't happen often.

Vernon Sollas was such a classy boxer with solid power. So unlucky to lose to Kirkland Laing in the ABA´S and his stamina issues let him down in an EBU fight were he was far ahead before falling to pieces in the 14th.

Les Pickett was a tough Welshman, I´ve seen the last 2 rounds (I think) of his fight with Sollas and it was rivetting stuff as you described.

Below is his next fight against southpaw Frenchman Gerard Jacob.

Oddly enough the Jacob later becomes French champion and challenges for the EBU title before becoming a journeyman whilst Pickett unfortunately losses a British title shot against the teak tough Alan Richardson and a final eliminator to the incredibly classy Pat Cowdell.

Hopefully some footage of those 2 fights shows up in some form or another.

What was great about that fight ? Drama yes but up until Hayes leg went. It was only looking like a Haye win ( most likely on points )

re watch it, Haye didn't land much clean before the leg went, and the drama of the build up and fight itself makes it in the list.

 

Eric Boon-Arthur Danahar I 1939 was a terrific fight

I would also add Bruno v Lewis.
It kind of gets swept under the carpet that Bruno was giving Lewis all sorts of problems.
Ram rod jab finding a home often, properly unsettled Lewis - Bruno's eagerness to try and knock him out was his undoing.

 

Haye wasn’t landing at all. But he was completely shot at that point too.

Basically traded in a few losses to Bellew to fund a retirement nest egg

 

Arthur v Gomez was sensational and another favourite of mine was Macklin v Moore.
