Pure BS the Chavez fight literally ruined Taylor and its not even open for debate.
Aaron Davis was one of the weaker champions at the time hence why Taylor's people chose him and not somebody else.
As a matter of fact Davis was seconds away from getting stopped by MARK BRELAND before landing a Sunday punch.
The reason why Norris was selected by Taylor's people was it was because it was a high level bout for a big pay day and Taylor's people knew Taylor had 0 chance in that fight.
Taylor looked HORRIBLE in the Garcia fight and escaped with a split decision and in the Brown fight he got dropped and struggled with someone who wasn't even really a contender.
Taylor's people saw the writing on the wall and sacrificed a damaged boxer(Taylor) for a payday.

 

He was never going to be the same after Chavez 1.
I agree he should have at least stayed at jr.welter- if he could- and he possibly could have beaten a lesser champion but Taylor's days as an elite fighter were pretty much over after Chavez 1.

 

I don’t disagree that the Chavez loss had a devastating effect on him and that he probably lost something. But he did well at welterweight following that defeat and looked pretty good. I think it was then Norris fight that finished him off

 

Davis had just sparked Mark Breland and Taylor schooled him in one sided fashion in only his first fight at welterweight. Was that BS ? And Glenwood Brown WAS a contender. He was ranked at the time

 

I actually thought for the first two rounds Taylor was fighting at an even level to Norris from a technical standpoint, but the difference in firepower and size was just totally insurmountable. Yeah, that was horrendous matchmaking on the part of Taylor's camp. It was really exciting, though, while it lasted.

 

Brown was a weak contender with a built up record. Christ he lost to forty something SAOUL MAMBY and shot to pieces Edwin Curet who was on a losing streak before beating Brown.
Before that ? Blocker was boxing his ears off.
Davis beat what top welterweights ?? Curtis Summit beat Davis and got robbed.

 

He won a SPLIT DECISION against Luis Garcia.
Got bounced off the canvas by Brown.
Those two are NOT top tier talent.

 

I’ll say it like this…. After the Chavez loss he moved up in weight, won a world title and defended it a few times. After losing to Norris he never did anything of note again despite still only being around 26 years of age….. Chavez hurt Taylor…. Norris wrecked him..

 

Dude, Aaron Davis was 32-0 and a big welter at that. He had just lifted the title from Mark Breland who was a top man in the Duva’s stable and a former Olympian. How about former champ Gene Hatcher and future champ Luis Santana? Maysonet was no cream puff either. All this after Taylor was coming off a devastating loss a year earlier that YOU say destroyed him permanently. And Glenwood brown lost a narrow decision to Mamby ( a seasoned former champ ) when he was a green prospect. He rematched him a few fights later and returned the favor. Brown was a durable active fighting contender who was ranked when Taylor fought him. You seem to be going to great lengths to downplay good wins to prove some point and I don’t know why. We both know the Chavez fight hurt him and diminished him, but he very clearly wasn’t finished until after the Norris fight. Why ? Because finished fighters don’t move up in weight and win world titles and then defend them successfully. On the contrary they start losing to journeyman and other obscurities which is what happened to Meldrick following the Norris loss.

 

Glenwood Brown had a built up record that is about it.
Please spare me Davis victory over Hatcher- the same boxer who got blitzed by Honeyghan in a ROUND years earlier.
Are you really going to call Saoul "seasoned " or pretty much a,shot former world champion that everyone used for name recognition on the way up ...except of course for Brown who managed to LOSE.

He had ZERO chance in winning the Norris fight. And everyone knew it.
Why do you think his people were so,eager to make that fight happen ?

 

Davis was chosen because he had a glittering record and thats about it.
Jorge Maysonet was shot and HE STILL dropped Davis- the same fighter Simon Brown beat the hell out of.
Mark Breland was a HUGE disappointment as a pro and everybody knew welterweightAnd that is Davis BEST win in some,thirty odd fights at welter let that sink in.

 

lol sure. Coming off of five title fight wins all by knockout in 16 months including Lloyd Honeyghan and Rafael Pineda made Breland a disappointment alright. And yeah, Davis was chosen as Taylor’s first welterweight fight because he was 32-0, a world champion, a bigger than average welter and had just sparked Taylor’s stable mate. Sure seems like a soft touch to me for a guy moving up and weight and recently suffering a loss that you say wrecked him. gotta hand it to ya, you’ve got a good sense of humor .

 

Davis was very limited and it showed in that fight and it also showed Taylor was no longer the same boxer he was pre Chavez.
Pineda was a LIGHT WEIGHT and somehow received a title shot at WELTERWEIGHT and still managed to rock Breland.
Honeyghan was beyond shot in that fight and everyone knows that.
Brelands toughest fight at welter was STARLING who KNOCKED him out remember after Breland flopped around the canvas the entire fight.
Simon Brown was the other champion and notice there was 0 talk of Taylor meeting Brown because Simon would have massacred Taylor.
