This fella is pretty much forgotten about already. He had an impressive run up until he took on more than he could handle with Spence. What if he stayed at lightweight or light welterweight for a couple more years and picked up a few more good wins and retired unbeaten? Would he being going in to some mythical matchups at lightweight say instead of being the forgotten man that he is?
Really technically skilled and disciplined. I really questioned his grit against salido though. Didn't really reach his true potential.
I think he actually could've been great. He may never have been really sold on being a boxing lifer, if you will. Which is fine but I was a little disappointed in the turnout after he earned my interest. If he'd wanted it more, I think it would've converted into a big net positive for his place in boxing. It wasn't so much standout physical traits as on well-rounded traits and skills that made me think he was going to great places.
He came from a boxing family and, as would be expected, was a well rounded fighter with solid skills, especially for his era. I don't think that he really wanted to be a fighter, it didn't seem like his heart was in it.
This sentiment definitely came across in his interviews at times. He was knowledgeable about boxing, obviously, growing up in a boxing family and becoming a successful world class fighter. But there seemed to be an underlying dissatisfaction and lack of enthusiasm about his profession that you could just sense from listening to him. It was subtle, but it was definitely there. But credit to him. He was still a good fighter, he made his money, and then he got out without getting seriously hurt.
He would've done fine in the mix with Marquez, Morales, and Barerra or Castillo, Corrales, Freitas, and Casamayor. As it stands, he made a lot of money and left with his health. And he still had a borderline hof career.
Very good with the basic fundamentals to go along with his power. Patient, methodical, heavy jab, pinpoint accuracy, good counterpuncher, hard body puncher, and power in both hands. He had great punch selection and good control of distance well. Perhaps his main flaw was his slow footwork and it did seem like he could be on cruise control from time to time. For all his skills and punching power that he had at his disposal there was just something missing that kept him from becoming greater. His heart just wasn’t fully there for boxing. Also didn’t help that he decided to move up to fight Errol Spence in a questionable career decision. Garcia was more than happy to get washed out by Spence rather than face Lomachenko or Linares for some reason but I guess he was more interested in money at that point. Really liked his textbook style but overall Garcia had a severely underwhelming and frustrating career despite being such a talented fighter, akin to someone like Jose Luis Lopez.
I think the fist pumping after clearly losing every round vs Spence made him too much of a laughing stock and completely destroyed whatever legacy he had. It was such an absolutely pathetic look. He knew he was clearly losing. It became a meme, I still see it talked about. He is only usually mentioned when making fun of a fighter when they start doing it.. "He's doing the Mikey Garcia fist pump hahaha!!"
Guy was moving up 2 weight classes. He might have thought that he had a decent chance going in but after the first 3 rounds he knew he was outgunned and just looked to survive all the way through. The fist raised after the end of each round suggests that he was content to just keep getting beat for 12 rounds. He had no business being in there with Spence when he could have fought Loma instead.
Two guys at 140 against Lipinets and Broner. Regardless he was still capable of making 135 when he fought Robert Easter Jr just one fight prior to his first loss. There was no reason for him to take on Spence when no one was asking for him to fight at 147. Would have liked to have seen him against Jorge Linares.
