He was a limited guy. It showed in his career, in his biggest fights.

 

Sturm and Quartey bashed him to a Pulp.

 

Some pretty wild takes on this thread. De La Hoya wasn't unbeatable, but he constantly faced the best of the best. Robbed against Mosley, robbed against Trinidad, has wins over Chavez (x2) and Sweet Pea, and very underrated wins in there too, such as his domination of an undefeated Genaro Hernandez. Not sure why anyone thinks having a close fight with Ike Quartey is somehow a benchmark for being overrated. Quartey was a brilliant fighter and was undefeated, in his absolute prime, and he still lost.

De La Hoya also gave a prime Floyd 12 solid rounds and has an Olympic gold medal. If that's not good enough to be considered great then your benchmark is simply too high. DLH is easily a top 10 welterweight of all time, you could make a case for him being top 5, I don't have him in the top 5, but it's not the wildest idea given the strength of his wins and his overall resume. The fact he's a cross-dressing lunatic outside the ring clouds people's judgements about how good he actually was in his prime.

 

I am not too much of a boxing historian, but easily a top ten welterweight of all time seems unsure, doesn't it? I mean i have no trouble with anyone putting him 5-10, but there is the option for discussion:

Pacquiao
Whitaker
SRR
SRL
Hearns
Duran

Then you have old guys i think are regarded as great. I find it hard to compare them and I am not an expert on them, but they tend to get rated very highly:

Armstrong
Griffith
Napoles
Benitez
Langford
Burley
...

And a modern entry with crawford which many will argue to be above DLH, too.

That said i do appreciate DLHs career choices a lot, especially compared to crawford and his selection of opponents down to the last one in old canelo.

I think he is, I would have him above Crawford. I think he beats Crawford, because of his high volume style and iron chin, stylistically De La Hoya is a horrible fight for Bud. I have Duran rated at lightweight more than welterweight, aside from the big win against SRL I don't think he campaigned at 147 enough or had enough big wins to be considered within the top 10.

Same with Hearns, I rate him as one of the greatest ever at 154 rather than 147. They are greater fighters though, P4P. In terms of Mayweather, DLH give him a pretty good fight when he was miles out of his prime, and he also beat Whitaker. I know it was a close fight and could have gone either way, but I think De La Hoya won that one.

Any idea that he is overrated is something I don't buy, I've not heard a convincing argument otherwise apart from subpar performances in one off fights he should have lost like Sturm, but his collective resume speaks for itself. He fought about a dozen hall of fame fighters in a 7/8 year spell and was top of the P4P rankings for about 18 months. Unbelievable fighter really.

This alone is so rare that of course you have to rate him highly. This was that Mexican dude that white chicks would be like "Oh, okay, I guess I can do a Mexican guy without all the whatever." and the Mexican dude that black chicks can go "I want a Caucasian-looking man, but not like Wonder Bread. " and he could be that guy for everybody, it's crazy.

 

I dont think anyone from 135 to 154 beats him from the past decade
